N1MM vs Log4OM for everyday logging — worth switching if i already do contests?

so ive been using N1MM for pretty much everything for the last few years and it works great for contests obviously, that's kind of what its built for. but outside of contest weekends its honestly kind of clunky for just sitting down and working some DX or doing a casual POTA activation. the interface feels like overkill when im not in contest mode if that makes sense.

somebody at our club mentioned Log4OM and i downloaded it and poked around a little bit but i havent really committed to learning it. it does look a lot cleaner for general logging and the QSL tracking stuff seems way more fleshed out. my main concern is that i dont want to have two separate logging programs and deal with duplicate logs or ADIF import headaches every time i do a contest weekend with N1MM and then go back to Log4OM for the rest of the time.

also i run WSJT-X pretty regularly for FT8 and right now its just logging straight into N1MM which works fine but i've heard Log4OM plays nice with WSJT-X too. has anyone actually run that setup and does it cause any weirdness with duped QSOs or anything. genuinely not sure if its worth the hassle of switching or if i should just deal with N1MMs quirks outside of contests

yeah i ran basically the same setup you're describing for a while, N1MM for contests and Log4OM for everything else. the ADIF transfers were annoying at first but once you get in the habit of exporting after every contest and importing into Log4OM its really not that bad, takes maybe two minutes. the duplicate checking in Log4OM will catch most of the obvious ones.

the WSJT-X integration with Log4OM works through UDP just like it does with N1MM, you just have to make sure you dont have both programs open and listening on the same port at the same time or you'll get weird behavior. i made that mistake once and ended up with some QSOs going into N1MM when i thought i was logging to Log4OM. just something to watch. overall though Log4OM is way nicer for day to day stuff, the cloudlog sync and the award tracking alone made it worth it for me

honestly i just use Log4OM for everything including contests now and stopped bothering with N1MM. i know thats probably heresy to the serious contest crowd but for the smaller contests i do its totally fine. the contest modules in Log4OM have gotten a lot better in the last couple versions. probably not ideal if you're doing CQWW and trying to squeeze every rate advantage but for like a state QSO party or a weekly sprint its perfectly workable.

the WSJT-X logging just works, never had dupe issues with it. you do want to go into the settings and make sure Log4OM is set as the primary logging destination in WSJT-X and then it just shows up in real time. only thing that bugged me early on was the cabrillo export for contest submission felt a little fiddly but i think thats been patched since then
