getting better audio on SSB — what actually makes a difference

so ive been running SSB for a few years now mostly on 40m and 20m and i feel like my audio has always been kind of mediocre. people never complain exactly but i never get those unsolicited comments like 'great audio' that i hear some guys get. been using an IC-7300 with the stock mic and just now starting to wonder if thats the whole problem or if theres more to it.

someone on the air last week told me to check my ALC and make sure its not pinning, which i honestly hadnt thought about much. i looked it up and yeah i think i was driving it too hard. but beyond that i dont really know what else to look at. compression settings? the mic itself? EQ? i have no idea where to start and theres so much conflicting advice out there about this stuff.

what actually moves the needle for SSB audio in your experience, not just theoretically but stuff you actually tried and noticed a difference

the ALC thing is huge and most people ignore it for way too long. if your ALC is riding high constantly youre basically clipping the signal and it sounds like garbage on the other end even if your S-meter looks fine to you. on the 7300 specifically i'd back off the mic gain until the ALC is just barely kissing the first couple bars on peaks, not slamming it.

beyond that, the stock mic on the 7300 is honestly not terrible but it is pretty mid-heavy and can sound a bit nasal depending on your voice. the built in TX equalizer on that radio is actually pretty decent — i spent maybe an hour one evening with a buddy on the other end giving me reports while i tweaked it and it made a noticeable difference. boosted a little in the low mids around 200-300hz to get some warmth and rolled off a bit of the upper mids where it was getting harsh. nothing dramatic, small adjustments.

compression is a whole other rabbit hole. a little goes a long way on SSB. too much and you start sounding like a buzz saw, which ironically makes you harder to copy not easier. i run maybe 2-3dB of compression on mine and leave it there.

yeah what he said about ALC. also dont overlook where the mic is physically — i used to hold it too close and off to the side because i thought it looked cool or something and my audio was apparently pretty bad lol. straight on, about an inch or two back from your lips makes a big difference, at least with dynamic mics like the stock hm-219 or whatever they ship with the 7300 these days.

i switched to an Heil PR-781 a while back and that helped but honestly fixing my mic technique helped just as much for way less money
