confused about QSL cards vs LoTW vs eQSL — do I need all three?

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i keep seeing people talk about sending QSL cards and also uploading to LoTW and eQSL and im honestly not sure if i need to do all of these or if one is enough. like whats the actual point of each one?

i made my first real HF contact last week (40m SSB, guy in Florida, im in Ohio so nothing crazy but still exciting for me) and he asked for my QSL and i said sure not really knowing what i was agreeing to. i have a basic log in WSJT-X and also just a paper log i keep on the desk.

do i need to print actual cards? i looked at some and they look really cool but also seems like a lot of effort and money if youre just starting out. is LoTW free? i remember reading something about needing a certificate or something and it seemed complicated. just trying to figure out the simplest way to confirm contacts without doing something wrong.

welcome to one of the most confusing parts of the hobby honestly, you're not alone in being puzzled by this. so the short version is — you dont need all three, but each one has a different purpose and different people care about different ones.

LoTW (Logbook of The World) is run by the ARRL and it's what you need if you're chasing awards like DXCC or WAS. it is free to use but yeah the setup is a little annoying because you have to get a certificate mailed to you and then install it. worth doing though especially once you get more active on HF. eQSL is also free and a lot easier to set up, some people love it, but its not accepted for official ARRL awards so keep that in mind.

paper cards are kind of a tradition thing. a lot of DX stations and older ops still really love getting physical cards and some awards specifically require the paper version. they're not strictly necessary when youre starting out but honestly once you get a nice design made up it's kind of fun to send them. i use all three personally but i wouldnt stress about it right away. get LoTW set up first since thats the most useful for awards long term.

the certificate thing for LoTW tripped me up too when i first started. you request it on the ARRL site and they actually mail you a postcard with a code on it to verify your address, takes like a week or two. then you download the tqsl software and import it. once thats done uploading logs is pretty easy, tqsl can import from a lot of logging programs directly.

for what its worth i barely bother with eQSL anymore since most of the people i care about confirming with are on LoTW anyway. paper cards i still send for any really special contacts, like if i work a new country or someone sends me a card first i always send one back. the guy in Florida probably just wanted a LoTW confirmation honestly, most stateside guys do. just ask him next time you catch him on the air.
