Kenwood TH-D75A vs Yaesu FT-5DR APRS Performance Comparison

Looking at upgrading from my aging TH-D7A for better APRS functionality. The new TH-D75A adds USB-C charging/data interface and digipeating capability, plus simultaneous reception of 2 D-STAR signals compared to the D74. The FT-5DR is significantly cheaper but wondering about APRS modem performance. For serious APRS work including emergency communications, which would you choose? Both have integrated GPS and TNC but curious about real-world decode sensitivity differences.

Kenwood is hands down the APRS leader. My D74 catches more packets than my FTM400XDR using a diamond 7900 super gainer roof mounted. The D74 is using a rubber duck. The TH-D75A should be even better with improved firmware.

Can confirm the APRS modem on the FT3D is junk in comparison to those Kenwood uses. Mine has trouble decoding signals that are sometimes as high as S9. The TM-D710 I have will decode S3 with ease. Same modem architecture in the FT-5DR I believe.

Price difference is substantial though. At around $650-750 street price, the TH-D75A sits firmly in premium territory. For D-STAR users or serious APRS operators, the value proposition is clear. If budget matters, FT-5DR gets you 80% there for much less.
