    So I just passed my Technician exam last week (finally) and im starting to look at handheld radios. I had no idea there were this many options. I've been reading threads here for like two hours and now im more confused than when i started honestly.
    My main thing is I want something that can hit the local repeaters, maybe do some simplex if anyone nearby is on, and eventually I want to mess around with APRS once I figure out what that even is. Budget is somewhere around $80-150 but i could stretch a little if something is really worth it.
    I keep seeing the Baofeng UV-5R stuff and it's so cheap I'm suspicious of it. Then theres the Yaesu FT-65 and the Kenwood TH-D74 but that last one is way out of my budget lol. Someone at the exam session mentioned the Wouxun KG-UV9D and i wrote it down but haven't looked into it yet.
    Any thoughts from people who actually use these day to day? I dont want to buy something and immediately regret it.

    dont overthink the two-program thing, lots of people do it. i actually just use N1MM for everything contest related including FT8 contests and then dump it all into my main log after. the UDP stuff with WSJT-X isnt that bad, theres a decent writeup on the N1MM wiki that walks through it step by step. Log4OM is great software but yeah for a fast CW contest it does feel a little heavy if that makes sense.
  3. the timeout thing is almost certainly a propagation or dial frequency issue, especially on HF. the RMS list shows nominal frequencies but conditions change throughout the day. if you're seeing the gateway listed as active but still timing out, try checking the Winlink map (winlink.org has a live gateway map) and look at the last heard time for that station — if it hasnt had a connection in a few hours during daytime, maybe that path just isnt working right now.
    for the hybrid network question — yeah the gateway itself needs an internet connection to relay your message to the Winlink CMS servers. thats the whole point of the RMS (Radio Message Server), it's basically a bridge. the radio leg is just your last mile. so if you're hitting an RMS that has spotty internet on their end, messages can queue up or fail silently. Vara HF is the right call though, way better than Pactor for most people without a hardware TNC. make sure your audio levels are dialed in tight, the SignaLink is sensitive to drive level and if you're clipping you'll just get garbage on the other end even if the connection appears to start.

    yeah i basically have the same setup you described — N1MM for contests, Log4OM for everything else. been doing it for probably two years now and honestly it works fine once you get the ADIF import dialed in. Log4OM is pretty solid for tracking confirmed QSLs and it handles LoTW sync way better than trying to do it through N1MM in non-contest mode.
    for WSJT-X i just have it pointed at a UDP port that Log4OM is listening on, so FT8 contacts go straight in during casual operating. when im contesting with WSJT-X i switch the UDP destination over to N1MM and then import to Log4OM after. its an extra step but takes like two minutes so i stopped caring. the duplicate checking in Log4OM is good enough that i havent had issues with doubled entries.
    one thing i will say — make sure you set up the Log4OM contest module if you havent, its actually more capable than it looks at first glance, but for serious contesting N1MM is still a different league in terms of how fast everything flows. the bandmap integration and the rate display alone are worth keeping it around for.

    i had almost the exact same issue with my first dipole, spent like two weekends messing with it. ended up being that my coax was acting like part of the antenna because i didnt have a choke or anything at the feedpoint. threw a few ferrite beads on the coax near the connector and the SWR dropped almost a full point. common mode current on the shield is sneaky and the MFJ wont tell you thats happening, it just shows you a weird SWR curve that doesnt respond to trimming the way you'd expect. might be worth trying before you start cutting more wire off

    not a dumb question at all, this trips up a lot of new generals. so the short version is the FCC allocations are the legal limits and the band plan is more of a gentlemans agreement on top of that. for 40m as a general you can do phone from 7.175 up to 7.300, and CW/data down below that. the band edge thing your elmer mentioned is a real concern though — the issue is that your transmitted signal has sidebands and if you tune right to 7.300 your upper sideband is actually going out above the edge which puts you outside your allocation. most people say stay at least 3 khz inside the edge to be safe, some say more depending on how clean your rig is. the voices you hear that seem to be in the wrong place might be extra or amateur extra class ops who have a wider chunk of the band than generals do, they can go lower on phone for example.

    yeah grounding on ugly construction can be a real nightmare, i went through the exact same thing on a 20m DC rx i built maybe three years ago. what helped me more than anything was basically treating the whole ground plane as a single star point and running individual ground returns back to one spot instead of just hoping the copper board ties everything together. also if your LO isnt shielded thats almost certainly contributing, even a little tin can soldered around it makes a huge difference, i used an altoids tin once and it worked fine.
    the TL072 should be okay for that application, its a bit noisy compared to something like an NE5532 but shouldnt be that bad. id look at your power supply decoupling first honestly, a big electrolytic right at the board plus some 0.1uf caps at each IC and see if that cleans things up before you start tearing into the RF side

    dont panic, youre probably fine with the third party thing as long as you were the control operator and the other person wasnt saying anything you wouldnt be comfortable with on a public channel. the rule is basically that a licensed ham has to be in control of the station at all times, so as long as you were right there supervising it and could have stopped transmission at any point youre good. now the third party traffic restrictions only really come into play when youre communicating with certain countries that dont have third party agreements with the US, so on a local repeater with your buddy that really shouldnt be an issue at all.
    on the emission types question, yeah part 97 can be a bit dense to read. for tech HF privileges the short answer is on the 10m phone segment you can do SSB, AM, that sort of thing. ARRL has a pretty readable privileges chart that honestly explains it better than the actual rule text does, id just google that and bookmark it.
