confused about the vanity callsign process — when can I apply?

okay so I just passed my general last month and I've been sitting on a sequential callsign that I'm not super happy with, it's just kind of long and clunky and I'd really like to get something shorter or maybe with my initials in it. a buddy at the club mentioned vanity calls but honestly I dont fully understand when I'm eligible or how the whole process works.

like do I have to wait a certain amount of time after getting licensed? and is there a fee now? I thought I heard something changed with the FCC fees a while back. also does it matter what license class you have in terms of what calls you can apply for? I feel like I've read conflicting stuff on different sites and I'm not sure what's current.

any help would be appreciated, I've been searching around but it's hard to find stuff that isn't outdated

yeah the fee thing trips a lot of people up — so as of a couple years ago the FCC started charging $35 for most amateur license applications including vanity callsign requests. used to be free so a lot of the older guides online don't mention it. you can apply right now actually, there's no waiting period after getting licensed. you just go through the ULS system on the FCC website and file a Form 605.

as for what calls you can get, it does depend on your license class. generals can apply for any unassigned call in the general group which includes 2x3 format calls mostly, like W1ABC type stuff. extras get access to the shorter ones — 1x2 and 2x1 formats, so things like K1AB or WA1B. if you upgrade to extra down the road you'd open up more options.

one thing worth knowing — if there's a specific call you want that belonged to a recently deceased ham, there's a waiting period before it goes back into the pool, I think it's like 2 years or something. but for just grabbing an unassigned sequential-style vanity call you're good to go whenever. the AE7Q website is really useful for checking what's available before you apply, saves a lot of guesswork.

went through this same thing about a year ago when I upgraded to extra and finally grabbed a 2x1 call I'd had my eye on for a while. the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is seriously the tool you want, I spent like an hour on there just browsing available calls before I found one I liked. the FCC ULS process itself is pretty straightforward once you've done it once but the first time it feels weirdly confusing for something that should be simple.

oh also — if you apply for a vanity call and it gets granted, your old sequential call just goes away so make sure you actually want the new one before you submit, haha. you can apply for another vanity later if you change your mind but that's another $35 so
