so ive had my TS-590SG sitting on the desk for going on 6 years now and it still works perfectly fine, no complaints really. but ive been eyeballing the IC-7300 for a while just because everyone seems to love the waterfall display and the DSP on it is supposedly really good. my 590 has decent filtering but honestly i think im just getting bored and looking for an excuse to spend money lol

the thing is i mostly do SSB on 40 and 20, occasionally 15 when the band opens up, and some 10m during contests. i dont do digital at all. so im wondering if the 7300 even makes sense for my use case or if im just chasing a shiny new radio. anybody gone from a 590 to the 7300 or vice versa and actually noticed a real difference on receive? not talking about specs, talking about actual operating experience on a busy 40m evening

honestly the 590SG is still a really capable radio and i dont think you'd notice a massive difference in receive on 40m SSB. the 7300 gets a lot of hype and the panadapter is genuinely nice to have but if you're not doing FT8 or anything like that the practical difference in day to day operating is pretty small. i made the switch about two years ago and sometimes i actually miss how the 590 felt to operate, the knobs and layout just made sense to me after years of use

that said the spectrum display does change how you operate in ways you dont expect. you start seeing activity you would have just tuned past before. so its not nothing. but if your 590 is working fine id say save the money unless you really want the waterfall for a specific reason

I went 7300 about 18 months ago coming from an older Kenwood and the waterfall alone made it worth it for me, but I do a lot of casual band-watching so that makes sense for my situation. For straight SSB ragchewing though? Probably not a huge deal. The 590SG receiver is no joke, Kenwood did that radio right.
