First vanity call experience - what went wrong?

Just got my first Tech license a few months ago and thought I'd apply for a vanity call to get something more personal than my sequential KD2XYZ assignment. Filed online through the FCC system and listed 8 different calls I liked, but my application was dismissed. The vast majority of applications are rejected for requesting call signs that aren't available, or requesting call signs that are outside of their license class. What am I missing here? I thought I did my homework but obviously something went wrong.

As a Technician, you can only apply for Group C or D call signs - that's 1×3 or 2×3 format. Did you accidentally request any 1×2 or 2×1 calls? Those are reserved for Extra class only and will get your application dismissed immediately.

I made the same mistake when I first applied! You need to independently research the application databases before deciding to file - the FCC licensing staff cannot provide assistance in determining availability. Check RadioQTH or AE7Q before submitting.

Also remember you must give the exact prefix, numeral, and suffix for each call sign - general requests like 'any call with my initials' will be dismissed. The FCC wants specific calls, not wish lists!
