confused about CTCSS tones on local repeaters — am i doing this wrong?

ok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech) and i finally got my first HT, a Baofeng UV-5R, and im trying to get into a couple of the local repeaters in my area. i can hear people talking on them just fine but when i transmit nobody responds and i dont think im getting into the machine at all.

i looked up the repeater directory and it says the tone is 100.0 Hz. i programmed that into the radio but im not sure if i set it as the transmit tone or the receive tone or both. i think i have it set right but honestly the Baofeng menus are kind of a nightmare to figure out. also is CTCSS the same as PL tone? people keep using both terms and i assumed they were the same thing but now im second guessing myself.

and just kind of a related thing — is there like a standard way to break into a conversation on a repeater? i dont wanna be rude and step on someone. i heard you just say your callsign during a pause but i wasnt sure if that was always the case or just for certain repeaters. still trying to figure out the etiquette side of things too

yeah PL and CTCSS are the same thing, PL is just the old Motorola trademark name for it but everyone uses both interchangeably. so no worries there. for the Baofeng you want to make sure the tone is set on the transmit side — a lot of people accidentally set it on receive which does basically nothing useful for getting into a repeater. in the menus you're looking for T-CTCS not R-CTCS. if you have R-CTCS set you'll just be filtering what you hear, not sending the tone to open the repeater up.

as for breaking in, yeah just toss your callsign out during a pause between transmissions, that's pretty standard on most machines. most folks are friendly and will acknowledge you, especially if you mention you're new. some repeaters have a specific format they like but usually the locals will just let you know if anything's off.

went through basically the exact same thing when i got my UV-5R lol. the menu labeling is really confusing. what worked for me was just using CHIRP to program it from the computer, way easier than fighting through the menus manually. you can download the repeater info straight from repeaterbook and set the tones correctly there. saved me a ton of headaches honestly. once i got it sorted out i was hitting three or four repeaters in my area no problem
