so what contests are you all planning for the rest of the year?

been getting more into contesting lately and honestly i had no idea how many there were until i started keeping track. did my first CQ WW SSB last october and it was kind of overwhelming but also really fun, managed to work like 40 countries which i know isnt much but felt like a big deal to me at the time. been doing some SOTA activations on the side too which is a totally different vibe but i love getting out on a summit with a pack radio and just making contacts with people who are hunting from home.

anyway Field Day is coming up and im trying to figure out if i should join a club group or just do it solo portable. i did 1E last year by myself with a wire antenna in a park and it went okay but i feel like i missed the social aspect. anyone have thoughts on that? also curious what people think about ARRL Sweepstakes, ive never done it but heard it can get pretty intense with all the section multipliers and stuff. is it worth jumping into as someone who still doesnt really have a contesting setup dialed in yet?

Field Day with a club is just a completely different experience, like you said you miss the social part and yeah thats kind of the whole point for a lot of people. the technical side gets spread around so nobody burns out, plus you usually end up learning a ton just from watching how the experienced ops run the pileups. i've done it both ways and solo is rewarding in its own way but if you have a decent club nearby it's worth showing up at least once to see what it's like.

as for Sweepstakes, dont let the complexity scare you off. yeah the multiplier system is a bit weird with sections instead of countries but once you get your head around it after the first hour or so it clicks. the 24 hour single op limit also means its not as brutal as something like CQ WW where people are going 48 hours and turning into zombies. i'd say go for it, worst case you learn a ton and get a feel for high rate domestic contesting which is its own skill set.

SOTA is what really got me hooked on actually operating instead of just tinkering with gear honestly. theres something about hauling a KX2 and a roll of wire up a hill and then actually making it work that just feels more real than sitting in the shack. the CQ WW activation i did from a summit last fall where i was also a SOTA reference was kind of a cool overlap, people were hunting me for both at the same time which was chaotic but fun.

for Field Day i'd say try the club thing at least once, you can always go back to solo if it isnt your thing but you might meet people with killer stations who want a buddy for future stuff
