confused about where exactly i can transmit on 40m as a general

ok so ive been a general for about 3 months now and i keep second guessing myself on where i can actually operate on 40 meters. i know there are segments for different license classes but when i look at the band plan and then look at what the band edge actually is im getting confused. like is 7.125 actually safe or am i creeping into tech territory or something. also my radio sometimes drifts a little especially when its cold and im worried about accidentally going outside my privileges. does anyone have a good way to think about this or a resource that lays it out clearly without being 50 pages long

yeah this tripped me up too when i first got my general. so the short version is as a general you can do phone on 40m from 7.175 to 7.300, and below that down to 7.025 is cw/data. the tricky part people dont talk about enough is the band edge thing — you really dont want to be operating right at 7.175 on usb because your signal has sidebands that extend a few khz above your carrier, so if you're on 7.175 usb your actual signal is spreading up to maybe 7.177 or so which is fine, but if you drift down toward the edge the sidebands start bleeding into the tech/extra portion below. rule of thumb i use is just dont go below 7.178 or so on ssb and you have some breathing room. the arrl band plan page is pretty decent if you can find it, they have a chart that lays out all the class privileges side by side.

one thing i'd add is that the drift issue is real and worth paying attention to. some rigs especially older ones or anything that hasnt warmed up can be off by a khz or more. i got dinged at a club meeting once (not by the FCC just an old timer) for parking too close to 7.300 on a cold morning. wasnt over the edge but it was close enough that he could tell my rig hadnt stabalised yet. just let it warm up 10-15 min before you get on and you'll probably be fine. also honestly 40m is so busy that hanging out near the band edges is annoying anyway, theres usually pileups and weird stuff happening there.
