Generator RFI Issues with New Inverter Models - Need Filtering Solutions

Recently picked up a Honda EU2200i for Field Day operations, and while it's incredibly quiet, I'm getting nasty RF hash across 40-10 meters that wasn't there with my older conventional generator. The switching noise seems to be conducted through the AC line and radiating from the power supply. I've tried ferrite cores on the AC input to my Astron RS-35M, but still seeing S7-8 hash on 20M.

  • Has anyone successfully filtered similar inverter generator RFI?
  • Are there specific power line filters that work well for ham applications?
  • Considering going back to battery power - are the new solar generator units actually RFI-quiet?

Had identical issues with my EU2200i. Solution was a Corcom 20VR1 power line filter installed right at the generator outlet, plus moving the genny 100+ feet from my antenna. The switching frequency harmonics were coupling into everything. Night and day difference with proper filtering.

Switched to an EcoFlow Delta 2 setup this year specifically because of generator RFI problems. Dead quiet RF-wise, and the pure sine wave output is much cleaner for the radio's power supply. Can run my FT-991A for 6+ hours on a single charge with solar top-off during the day.

Running 100 feet of extension cord helps tremendously - keeps the RFI source well away from your antenna field. Also try a big snap-on ferrite core (mix 31) around the entire AC cord right at the power supply input. Sometimes the generator case itself needs grounding to your station ground.
