SSB audio always sounds like garbage on my end — what am I doing wrong

so ive been on SSB for about a year now and honestly my audio reports are all over the place. sometimes people say i sound great, other times i get told i sound like im underwater or too bassy or something. im running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 through the headset adapter and i thought that combo was supposed to be basically plug and play but clearly im missing something.

ive messed with the TX bandwidth settings a little bit, tried going from 2.4k down to 1.8k thinking it might clean things up but honestly cant tell if it made a difference. somebody on a net told me to check my ALC and make sure its not peaking too hard but i dont really know what level its supposed to sit at. ive also got the mic gain probably too high now that i think about it, i cranked it a while back and never touched it again.

anyone have a rough starting point for mic gain and ALC on the 7300 for SSB voice? or just general tips for getting cleaner audio. i feel like theres a whole art to this that nobody explains upfront when youre getting into HF

yeah the ALC thing is huge and most people ignore it. general rule of thumb on the 7300 is you want the ALC meter barely ticking on voice peaks, not sitting there pinned or even hitting the middle of the range. if its riding high constantly youre basically compressing the snot out of your signal and it starts sounding distorted and mushy on the other end. back off the mic gain until the ALC is just kissing the first couple segments on peaks and youll probably sound a lot better.

also with the PR-40 specifically — its a dynamic so it wants you pretty close to it, like 2-3 inches. people underestimate how much mic technique matters on SSB. if youre across the room or talking at an angle the low end falls apart and you end up sounding thin or boxy. the 7300 has a built in monitor function too, plug headphones in and key up and you can hear roughly what youre putting out. not a perfect representation but better than flying blind.

honestly i went through the same thing when i first got on HF. for me the big fix was just turning mic gain down way more than felt right — like it felt too low but the reports got way better. also make sure speech compression isnt cranked, the 7300 has that built in and it can make audio sound really harsh if its set too aggressive. i keep mine around 3-4 and that seems to work okay for most conditions
