first time checking into a net and had no idea what i was doing lol

so last tuesday i finally worked up the nerve to check into our local 2m traffic net for the first time. ive been licensed about 4 months and kept telling myself id do it but kept chickening out. anyway i jumped in and honestly it went okay but i made a few mistakes that im still kind of embarrassed about.

the main thing was i didnt realize you're supposed to wait for the net control to acknowledge you before you start talking. i just kind of launched into my callsign and location and some rambling about having no traffic and the NCS had to interrupt me and explain the format. everyone was nice about it but still. also i keyed up at the wrong time and caused a double and didnt even realize it was me until the NCS asked if there was a station with interference.

is this normal for new people or did i just have a particularly rough first check-in? also does anyone have a good resource for how nets are actually supposed to work because i feel like i learned more in those 10 minutes than i did studying for my tech exam

oh man this brought back memories, my first net check-in i was so nervous i forgot my own callsign halfway through and just went silent for like three seconds. the NCS waited patiently and then just said go ahead with your call and i stumbled through it. nobody made me feel bad at all.

honestly what you described is pretty much how everyones first time goes. the doubling thing especially, its hard to know the timing until youve done it a few times and get a feel for when the frequency is actually clear. most NCS operators have seen it all and they genuinely want new people to participate, thats kind of the whole point of a net in some ways.

ARRL has a decent write-up on net procedures and theres also the NTS methods and practices guide which is a bit dry but actually explains the formalities really well. but honestly the best thing is just to keep checking in. after like 4 or 5 times it clicks and you stop overthinking it.

yeah totally normal dont even worry about it. i checked into my first net maybe 6 months ago and did basically the same thing. the NCS on ours actually told me afterwards on a separate QSO that he appreciates when new hams jump in even if they dont know the format perfectly, said its way better than people just listening forever and never participating.

one thing that helped me was just listening to the net for a couple sessions before checking in so i could hear how people were doing it. probably should have mentioned that before but anyway its a bit late for that advice now haha
