new guy question about jumping into a net — when is it okay to check in late?

okay so i've been licensed about four months now and ive been lurking on the local 2m net pretty much every week just listening and getting comfortable with how it flows. last tuesday i finally checked in and the net control was super friendly about it so that felt good.

but here's what i'm not sure about — the net had already been going for like 15 minutes when i finally got my radio sorted out and found the repeater. is it rude to check in late? i wasnt sure if i should just wait til next week or go ahead and key up during the check-in calls. i ended up waiting and just listened the whole time.

also kind of a related thing, when net control asks if there's any traffic or announcements and you dont have anything, do you just say your call and say nothing further or do you actually say no traffic? i've heard people do it both ways and i dont want to sound like i dont know what im doing even though i guess i dont yet lol

Don't worry too much about the late check-in thing, most net controls are pretty happy to take late check-ins right up until they close the net. If you hear them do a second call for check-ins just jump in then, and if you miss that just wait for them to ask for any final check-ins before closing — they almost always do that. Checking in late is totally normal, life happens and people tune in at different times.

On the traffic question, in most casual nets around here people just say their call and maybe "no traffic" or "just checking in" and that's perfectly fine. You'll start to pick up the rhythm of how your specific net runs after a few more weeks. Every net has its own little quirks honestly. The main thing is you're participating and that's what matters, those nets only stay alive because people actually show up.

yeah i was the same way when i first got my ticket, spent like two months just listening before i ever keyed up. late check-ins are fine, ive checked into nets like 20 minutes late before and net control just adds you to the list no big deal. the etiquette thing that tripped me up early on was waiting for a full second or so after the squelch breaks before i started talking because i kept getting cut off on the repeater. took me a while to figure out what i was doing wrong
