first SOTA activation coming up this weekend, any last minute tips?

so i finally picked a summit for my first ever activation, going up W6/NS-177 this saturday. ive done a couple chases from home which honestly got me hooked on the whole thing but actually going up a hill myself feels like a different thing entirely. im bringing my KX2 with a 20m link dipole and a 5ah lipo, plan is to operate SSB mostly but maybe some CW if i can get comfortable enough. already spotted myself on SOTAwatch so hopefully ill get some chasers lining up.

one thing im not sure about is whether i need to be at the absolute peak or just within the activation zone. i read the rules and it says 25 vertical meters below the summit but the trail kind of flattens out and im not 100% sure where that boundary is practically. also do most people announce a time or just spot when theyre ready? any advice appreciated, kind of nervous honestly

dont stress too much about the activation zone, the 25m rule is pretty generous on most summits and unless youre on some knife-edge peak youll probably be fine anywhere near the top. just use your phone GPS and the summit elevation listed on sotadata if you want to double check. for spotting, most activators post an alert on SOTAwatch a day or two before with an approximate time, then when you actually get set up and ready you put a fresh spot up. chasers watch the alerts to plan their day but theyre really watching the spots to know youre actually on the air. i usually give myself a 30 min buffer in my alert because getting the antenna sorted always takes longer than expected especially the first time lol

also bring more food than you think you need, summits in that area can be deceptively long approach. good luck saturday

oh nice W6/NS-177, ive chased that one before i think. yeah seconding what the other guy said about the spot vs alert thing, just put an alert up ahead of time and then spot yourself when youre actually on frequency and ready for pile. and honestly your first activation might be a little chaotic but thats fine, you only need 4 QSOs to qualify the summit so just get those in the bag and anything after that is gravy. i made like 7 contacts on my first one and felt amazing about it even tho i see people logging 40+ these days. CW will def get you more chasers if you can manage it but SSB is totally fine especially on 20m
