First mobile VHF/UHF radio - need installation advice

Just picked up my first mobile VHF/UHF rig - a Yaesu FTM-400XDR for my F-150. I'm overwhelmed by all the mounting and antenna options out there. I know the center of the roof is supposedly the best spot for the antenna, but I'm hesitant to drill holes. What are some good compromises for installation? Also, should I run power directly to the battery or can I use the aux power in the center console? Any advice from experienced mobile ops would be greatly appreciated!

Do a proper install, power off the battery directly. Do NOT tap into existing vehicle wiring, and for the love of God and all things holy, do NOT use cigarette lighter sockets. For antenna mounting, try a mag mount first on the roof center - you'll be surprised how well it works compared to other locations.

I went with a BuiltRight dash mount, allowing me to put the remote head and a remote speaker up there. The remote speaker was really helpful, as the radio body (and speaker) are under the passenger seat. For antennas, I started with mag mount until I was sure about placement.

Welcome to mobile! I recommend the Icom 2730A dual band mobile. I have two of them and have encountered no issues with them. They have a 50-watt output. Your FTM-400XDR is a great choice too. Don't overthink the antenna - even a simple mag mount works well for local repeater work.
