thinking about going for my Extra, is the theory part as bad as everyone says

so ive been a General for about two years now and a few guys at my local club keep bugging me to upgrade to Extra. i dont really have a burning need for it honestly, i mostly do HF phone on 40 and 20, but the extra privileges on like the lower parts of those bands would be kind of nice i guess. my main hesitation is everyone acts like the theory section is this massive wall to get over. like ive heard people say the math is brutal and theres stuff about filter design and transmission line theory that even EEs struggle with. is that actually true or is it one of those things that sounds scarier than it is. i remember the General exam being pretty straightforward once i actually sat down and studied the pool. does Extra work the same way if you just grind the question pool or do you actually need to understand the underlying concepts to pass it

honestly the question pool method still works for Extra, same as General. i wont lie to you, there are some questions where if you dont have at least a rough idea of whats going on you'll mix up the answers because a couple of them are really close together and designed to trip you up if youre just pattern matching. stuff like the reactance and impedance calculations, if you understand even the basics of what j means in a complex impedance you'll be fine. but i passed it studying maybe 6 weeks with HamStudy and a copy of the ARRL Extra Class License Manual. the manual explains things pretty well even if you dont have an engineering background. the privileges are worth it in my opinion, not just the band edges but also being able to act as VE for all license classes which comes in handy if you get involved with your local club's testing sessions.

just did mine last spring. the transmission line stuff and the filter Q factor questions were the ones that got me the most, i had to read those sections like three times. but yeah you can definitely pass by working the question pool. i used like 90% question pool grinding and maybe 10% actually reading about the theory and i passed with only two wrong. the band privileges on 75 meters and the cw portions of 40 were the main reason i did it tbh, opens up a lot more room when the bands are crowded
