confused about CTCSS tones on the local repeater — am i doing this wrong?

ok so i just got my technician license about three weeks ago and ive been trying to get into the local 2m repeater but nobody ever seems to hear me. i programmed the frequency in (147.315 with a plus offset) and i can hear people talking on it just fine but when i key up nobody responds or acknowledges me at all. a guy at the club meeting mentioned something about a CTCSS tone and i looked it up but honestly the explanations i found were kind of confusing.

from what i understand the repeater requires you to transmit a specific sub-audible tone along with your voice so the repeater controller knows to actually open up and retransmit you? is that right? and if i dont have the right tone programmed in my radio the repeater just... ignores me? my HT is a baofeng uv-5r and i think i can set the tone in the menu somewhere but i have no idea what tone this particular repeater uses. is there like a database or something where i can look that up?

also kind of a side question — when i do finally get on the repeater is there like a proper way to join a conversation thats already going on? i dont want to be rude about it but i also dont know the etiquette. any help appreciated, this stuff is way more complicated than the technician exam made it seem lol

yeah you basically got it right. the CTCSS tone (some people call it PL tone, that was motorola's old trademark name for it) is a continuous sub-audible tone that rides along under your voice when you transmit. the repeater's receiver has a tone squelch set to only open for that specific frequency, so without it the repeater literally never activates even if youre coming in full quieting. its not ignoring you personally, it just cant hear you in the way that matters.

for finding the tone, definitely check repeaterbook dot com — just search your area and it should list the input/output frequencies, offset, and the required CTCSS tone for most active repeaters. a lot of club websites also have their repeater info listed. once you find it, on the uv-5r you go into the menu and look for R-CTCS (thats receive) and T-CTCS (thats transmit) — for most cases you only need to set the transmit one to get the repeater to respond to you. the receive CTCSS is optional, that just filters what you hear on your end.

as for jumping into a conversation, the standard thing is to just wait for a pause between exchanges and then say your callsign. like just your callsign, nothing else, during the gap. whoever is talking will usually acknowledge you and you can introduce yourself. dont just start talking over people mid-QSO, that drives some folks crazy. most repeater regulars are pretty welcoming to new hams though so dont stress about it too much.

oh man i went through the exact same thing when i first got my ticket, spent like two weeks wondering why nobody could hear me on the local machine. turns out the repeater here uses 100.0 Hz and i had nothing programmed. felt like an idiot when i figured it out but whatever, we all start somewhere.

one thing i'd add — some repeaters around here are actually linked into systems like IRLP or AllStar and that can get a little different in terms of etiquette cause your signal might be going out to a bunch of other repeaters across the country or whatever. usually theres a bit more of a pause before people respond because of the audio delay through the internet linking. just something to keep in mind if you notice the conversations feel a little slower paced than you'd expect.
