when do you actually use phonetics vs just saying the letter

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still feel kind of weird about phonetics. like i know the NATO ones, alpha bravo charlie etc, but i see people on the repeater just saying letters sometimes and other times going full phonetic and i cant figure out when youre supposed to do which one. is there like an actual rule or is it just whatever feels right

also i was on HF the other day trying to work someone and i blanked on what X was. i know its Xray but in the moment i just said the letter and the other guy came back with Xray like he was correcting me lol. wasnt sure if i did something wrong or if he was just being helpful

haha the X thing gets everyone at first, xray is the weird one because nobody says xray in normal conversation. honestly there isnt a hard rule about when to use phonetics vs just the letter, its more situational. if the band is clear and youre just doing a quick exchange and conditions are good, most people just rattle off the letters. but if theres any qrm or the signal is weak or youre giving out your callsign for logging purposes then phonetics just make sense because there are too many letters that sound the same. B D E P T V all kind of blur together especially on SSB with a little noise.

that guy probably wasnt correcting you, more likely he was just confirming what he heard by repeating it back phonetically. thats pretty common, dont sweat it. after a while you stop thinking about it and just naturally switch modes depending on conditions

yeah i had the same confusion when i started. one thing that helped me was just remembering that phonetics exist because letters get garbled, so if you wouldnt have any trouble understanding the letter just say the letter. its not like the phonetic police are gonna come after you. i mostly use full phonetics when im giving my call at the start of a contact or if someone asks me to repeat something. mid-conversation i just say the letters normally most of the time
