when do you actually check in to a net vs just listening?

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i still feel awkward about nets. like i listen to the tuesday night 2m net on our local repeater all the time but i never check in because honestly i dont know what to say after they acknowledge me. the net control just says your callsign and then what? do you have to have something to say or can you just say "no traffic" and be done with it? i checked in once and just froze up and said something dumb about the weather and felt embarrassed for like a week lol.

also whats the actual etiquette for checking into a net if youre mobile and might have to drop off early? do you say that upfront or just disappear when you need to? nobody ever explains this stuff in the technician materials and i feel like im missing a whole layer of how this hobby works.

oh man this is such a common thing and honestly the net control guys are used to it, they dont mind at all. when they acknowledge you just say your callsign, your name, your location, and whether you have any traffic or announcements. something like "KD9whatever, this is Mike in Springfield, no traffic" and thats literally it. youre done. net control will say thanks and move on. nobody expects you to give a speech.

for the mobile thing, absolutely tell them upfront. most nets have a "mobile and portables" check in round specifically for people who might drop. you just say youre mobile when you check in and any decent net control will note that and not be surprised if you disappear. i did nets for like two years before i felt comfortable and now i net control occasionally and i promise we are rooting for new folks to check in, it makes the net feel alive instead of just the same 6 guys every week.

yeah what he said. also dont worry about the weather thing, half the time thats exactly what people talk about on our local net anyway haha. our Wednesday net basically turns into a weather and ragchew session after the formal part is done. just jump in, worst case you stumble over your words a little and nobody cares at all, we were all new once.
