confused about how vanity callsigns actually work — do i just pick whatever i want?

so i just passed my general last week (still kind of in shock honestly) and i've been reading about vanity callsigns and i'm not totally sure i understand how the whole thing works. like i know you can apply through the FCC for a specific callsign but there seems to be a whole system to it and i cant figure out if theres a waiting period or what.

my sequential call is KD9 something and its fine but my grandfather was a ham back in the day and had a really clean 2x1 call in the W5 district. i'd love to get something like that or at least a shorter call. do i just go to the ULS and apply or is there more to it? also does it cost money now? i remember reading something about fees being added but wasnt sure if that applied to vanity too.

any help appreciated, still figuring all this stuff out

congrats on the general first of all. okay so the vanity system — it's not quite pick whatever you want but it's pretty flexible. you apply through the FCC ULS and you can list multiple callsigns you want in order of preference. the FCC then runs a batch process and if your top choice is available and nobody with higher license class priority grabbed it first, you get it.

the priority thing is important — certain calls can only be held by certain license classes, like a 1x2 or 2x1 format is general and above, and 1x1 is Extra only. so your Extra friends get first crack at the good short ones. if you're general you can still get a nice 2x2 or in some regions a 1x2 depending on whats available. and yes there is a $35 fee now for vanity applications, that started a couple years back when the FCC started charging for all amateur applications. worth it imo if you find a call you really like.

as for your grandfather's old call — if it's been released back into the pool you absolutely can apply for it. ae7q.com has a great tool to check availability and see when a call might become available. highly recommend poking around there before you apply.

yeah what the previous guy said, ae7q is basically the go-to for checking this stuff. i spent like two hours on there before i applied for mine lol. one thing i'll add — when you submit the vanity application there's a window period of a few days where other people can also apply for the same call, and then at the end of the window the FCC picks whoever has the highest priority. so if two people both want the same 2x1 and one of them is Extra class they'll win even if they applied after you. kinda annoying but thats how it works.

i got my vanity on the first try which was lucky i think. just make sure you put in several choices ranked by preference in case your first pick gets snagged.
