first real contest season coming up — feeling completely lost on where to even start

so i got my general back in april and ive been mostly just doing ragchews on 40m and some digital stuff but everyone in my local club keeps talking about CQ WW coming up and field day kind of already passed but they say theres always next year and honestly im just confused about all of it. like what even is the difference between CQ WW and ARRL sweepstakes because both seem to involve making a lot of contacts but the exchange info looks totally different and i dont know if my station is even set up right for any of it.

i have a kenwood ts-590 and a wire dipole up about 30 feet, nothing fancy. been listening to some contest weekends just to hear what its like and it sounds absolutely chaotic, guys just firing off callsigns and numbers and i cant even follow along fast enough. is there a good way to practice before actually jumping in or do you just kind of throw yourself at it and see what happens. also heard people mention SOTA counts for some awards but is that a separate thing entirely or does it cross over with contests somehow. just trying to figure out where a newer guy fits into all this

welcome to the rabbit hole haha. okay so CQ WW and sweepstakes are pretty different animals even though yeah they both involve piling up contacts. CQ WW is huge, like worldwide huge, you're working everyone and the exchange is just signal report plus your CQ zone number. sweepstakes is north america only but the exchange is this long thing with a serial number and precedence and your ARRL section and it trips everyone up the first time. dont stress about memorizing it, just use N1MM or whatever logging software and it'll prompt you.

your 590 and a dipole at 30 feet is honestly totally fine to get started. you wont be competing for top scores obviously but you'll make contacts, plenty of them, especially on 40 and 20 during peak hours. just pick a frequency thats not being used, throw out your call a few times, and see who answers. or just search and pounce which means you tune around and answer other peoples CQs. thats way easier to start with.

SOTA is kinda its own separate world, its about activating summits and the contacts count toward SOTA awards not really toward contest scores, though some SOTA activators do operate during contests from a peak which is kind of a fun combo. worth looking into separately once you get the contest bug sorted out.

yeah just jump in honestly. i was terrified my first CQ WW and i think i made like 47 contacts total and thought that was amazing lol. now i do a few hundred on a good weekend but it took a few seasons to get the hang of the pace. the main thing is dont worry about the score, just treat it like practice and see how many states or countries you can work, thats motivation enough to keep going.

one thing i'd say is download N1MM+ before the contest, set it up ahead of time because trying to figure out logging software during an actual contest is a nightmare. there's good youtube tutorials. and if your club does field day next june try to actually participate in person because thats a great low pressure way to see how a contest operation actually runs before doing it solo at home.
