What should I expect at my first VE test session?

I've been studying for months and feel ready to take my Technician exam, but I'm nervous about the actual test session. What's the process like? Do I need to bring anything special besides ID and the exam fee? How long does it take, and what happens if I pass?

  • Should I arrive early?
  • Can I take multiple exams in one session?
  • How soon will I get my callsign?

You must create an FCC account and register your SSN in CORES before the session to get your FRN. Bring photo ID, cash/check for the exam fee, and arrive 15 minutes early. The VE team is often your first face-to-face contact with hams, and their enthusiasm will rub off on you!

I was terrified at my first session, but the VEs were incredibly welcoming and patient. New licenses are transmitted to the FCC within 1-2 business days for weekend sessions. If you pass, you can absolutely take the next level exam right away! I walked out with credit for both Technician and General that day.

In-person exams are most common, though remote exams are sometimes available. The actual test is straightforward - 35 multiple choice questions, you need 26 correct to pass. There's a $35 FCC application fee for new licenses, but no fee for upgrades. Once you pass and pay the fee, expect your callsign within 24-48 hours!
