first time checking into a net and i had no idea what i was doing lol

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last tuesday after having my tech license for like 4 months. i've been listening to it for a while just to get a feel for things but i figured i should actually participate at some point.

anyway the net control called for check-ins and i just keyed up and said my callsign and it was fine but afterward i realized i had no idea if i was supposed to say anything else, like location or that i had traffic or whatever. the guy running it just acknowledged me and moved on so i guess it was okay but i felt like i was missing something.

also when there were two people who keyed up at the same time it got all garbled and the net control asked them to repeat and i could not figure out from context who was supposed to go first. is there like a standard way that gets sorted out or does it depend on the net? i feel like ive been operating in a vacuum and just kind of guessing at everything.

welcome to the hobby, you did fine honestly. most informal nets around here are pretty relaxed and net control will guide you if they need anything specific. some nets want you to give your call, name and location when you check in, others just want the call. best thing to do is listen to a few cycles before jumping in like you did, which sounds like you already did that, so you're ahead of most new folks.

the doubling situation, that's just part of life on a repeater. net control usually has a way of handling it, sometimes they'll ask for the partial call they heard first, sometimes they just ask everyone who doubled to try again. there's no magic rule, just wait a beat and try again. it gets easier once you know the voices on the net and can kind of anticipate the rhythm of things. stick with it, nets are a great way to actually get comfortable talking on the air.

i had the exact same experience when i first checked in, felt like everyone else knew some secret script and i missed the memo. turns out most people are pretty forgiving especially on a local club net. i just started listening to what other people said when they checked in and kind of copied the format after a few weeks. now it feels totally natural but yeah that first time is awkward for sure.
