Winlink setup questions - RMS gateway keeps rejecting my connection

So ive been trying to get Winlink Express working for about two weeks now and im losing my mind a little. Background: i have a Signalink USB hooked up to an IC-7300 and im trying to connect to a local RMS gateway on VHF. The software sees the audio device fine and i can watch the waterfall in Vara FM but when i actually try to connect to the gateway it just sits there for a bit and then kicks back a failed connection error. No idea if its a timing issue or my audio levels or what.

I set the dial frequency to 144.950 which is what the gateway is supposedly on according to the RMS list, and i matched the SSID. The gateway shows as active on the Winlink maps page but i dunno if that just means it checked in recently or if its actually sitting there waiting for connects. Is there like a status page or something that tells you if a specific node is accepting connections right now?

Also i read somewhere that you're supposed to leave your callsign in a specific format in Winlink Express settings but i didnt totally understand if the SSID matters for the initial handshake or not. Im licensed, extra class, just new to this whole digital packet side of things.

The RMS gateway showing active on the map just means it sent a beacon recently, doesnt necessarily mean its in a good state or that the sysop hasnt had issues. First thing id check is your audio levels in Vara FM — the transmit drive is really fussy and if you're overdiving it the gateway will just ignore the connect request. In Vara there's a little ALC meter and you really want to stay out of the red, like aim for maybe 50-60% on the drive slider and see if that changes anything.

Also double check that your PTT is actually keying the radio. With the Signalink it should be handling that via VOX but ive seen setups where the delay is off and the radio doesnt key fast enough before Vara starts sending data. There's a TX delay setting somewhere in Vara FM settings, bumping that up a tiny bit sometimes fixes it. What baud rate are you trying? Some gateways in my area only do 1200 even though the default in Vara wants to negotiate higher.

yeah the SSID thing confused me too when i first set this up. short answer is your SSID in Winlink Express should just be your callsign, no SSID suffix needed unless you're running multiple stations. the gateway's SSID on the frequency is separate from your account stuff.

one thing worth trying — open the Winlink Express session log while you're attempting the connect and see exactly what error message comes back. sometimes it'll say something like "channel busy" or give you a clue whether it even heard the gateway respond. also some gateways are only open certain hours depending on how the op has it configured, so worth trying at a different time of day too honestly
