new ham here — when do you actually talk on a repeater net?

so i just got my technician license about three weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m repeater a lot just to get a feel for things. there's a net on tuesday nights and i really want to check in but honestly im not sure of the right way to do it. like i know you wait for the net control to ask for check-ins but do you just say your callsign? do you say your name too? what if someone else starts talking at the same time as you — do you just stop and wait or keep going?

also i heard someone get kind of corrected on air last week for jumping in during a net and it made me nervous about doing something wrong. i dont want to be that guy. any advice from people who actually run or participate in these things would be really appreciated

honestly the best thing you can do is just listen to a few nets first and you'll pick up the rhythm pretty fast. most nets around here when net control asks for check-ins you just give your callsign phonetically — so like kilo alpha one whiskey bravo or whatever yours is — and wait for them to acknowledge you. some nets have you add your name and location, some don't, just depends on the net. net control will usually tell you what they want at the start if you catch the preamble.

the doubling thing (two people transmitting at once) happens all the time, nobody is going to be mad at you for it. if you realize you're doubling just let go of the PTT and wait a second, net control will usually sort it out. that person who got corrected probably did something a bit more disruptive than just timing. dont sweat it, everyone starts somewhere and most nets are really welcoming to new hams checking in for the first time.

yeah what he said. i checked into my first net like a month after i got licensed and i was so nervous i fumbled my callsign lol. net control just asked me to repeat and that was it, no big deal. just go for it honestly
