first POTA activation tomorrow, kinda nervous — any last minute tips?

So i finally pulled the trigger and signed up to activate a local state park tomorrow morning. its K-4829 if anyone knows it, pretty small park but its about 20 minutes from my house so seemed like a good starting point. im running a KX2 with a homemade end fed and a 20ah lifepo4 battery so the setup should be fine i think.

what i keep second guessing myself on is the spotting stuff. i set up an account on the POTA website and i know i can self-spot through the app but im not sure how often to re-spot or if thats even something people do. also do hunters generally expect you to stay on one frequency for a while or is it normal to hop around if 40m dies down and i want to try 20m.

ive done plenty of contesting and regular HF so the actual radio part doesnt worry me, its more the logistics of how POTA activations are supposed to flow that im fuzzy on. any advice from folks who have done a bunch of these would be appreciated

You're going to do great, honestly the first one is always the most nerve wracking and then you realize its just operating from a park which you've obviously done before in a different context. The self-spotting thing — yeah just spot yourself when you get on frequency, and if you switch bands just re-spot with the new frequency. People do it all the time. Some activators spot every 20-30 minutes or so just to keep the pile coming but theres no rule about it, just whatever feels right.

On the frequency hopping, totally normal to move from 40 to 20 or wherever the band is cooperating. Just spot again when you land somewhere new and the hunters will find you. The POTA community is really good about that. One thing i'd say is dont stress too much about getting exactly 10 QSOs even though thats the minimum for a valid activation — most of the time if conditions are halfway decent you'll blow past that in the first 20 minutes. Enjoy the park, thats kind of the whole point anyway.

oh and bring more water than you think you need, learned that one the hard way last summer lol. also make sure your park reference number is right before you go — i once spent an hour activating what i thought was one park and logged it under the wrong K number. had to do it again which wasnt the worst thing but still annoying
