when do you actually use phonetics vs just saying the letter

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i still feel kinda awkward about when to use phonetics. like on a clear simplex contact with someone nearby i feel silly going through the whole Alpha Bravo Charlie thing but then on HF when its noisy i obviously need them. is there like an unwritten rule about this or do people just kind of feel it out as they go? also i noticed some older guys at my club use different words sometimes, not the NATO ones, like they'll say something like "Adam" instead of "Alpha" and i didnt want to say anything but is that just a regional thing or old habit or what

yeah you basically just feel it out. if the band is clear and you can understand each other no problem then nobody really cares if you skip phonetics, but the moment theres any QRM or the signal is fluttery you should go full phonetics every time especially for your callsign. i've had contacts where i thought we were copying each other fine and then they asked me to repeat my call three times because a B and a D sound identical in noise.

the old phonetics thing is just guys who learned before NATO standardization was really drilled into everyone. you'll still hear "Adam Baker Charlie" from some old timers, thats the old Able Baker phonetic alphabet from like WWII era military use. nothing wrong with it really but NATO is what most people worldwide recognize so if you're working DX stick to the standard ones or you'll confuse people

honestly i still mess this up sometimes and ive been licensed 3 years lol. i'll be on a ragchew with a local guy and out of habit start spelling my callsign phonetically and it just feels overly formal. but then on a contest or a pile-up if you dont use crisp NATO phonetics people just wont pull your call out. ive also noticed some DX stations get confused if you deviate from the standard ones so i just drilled myself to always use the same ones no matter what and now it's automatic
