first POTA activation went better than expected, some questions though

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house, K-4882 if anyone's familiar with it. i was nervous as heck going in because ive never done anything like this before — just been doing some casual HF from home for about 8 months. brought my FT-891 and a random wire antenna i threw up in a tree, ran it into a 9:1 unun and just hoped for the best honestly.

ended up making 23 QSOs in about 2 hours which i guess is enough to count but i was kind of hoping for more. most of the contacts were on 40m, tried 20m for a while but it felt like nobody was hearing me. i was running about 50 watts. logged everything on paper because i couldnt figure out how to get the POTA app working on my phone before i left, which was kind of annoying.

my question is — do you have to upload the log the same day or is there a grace period? and also is there a good way to let hunters know youre activating before you go out? i saw something about spotting but wasnt totally sure how it works. anyway it was a lot of fun and i definitely want to do more of these, already looking at a couple parks within driving distance

congrats on the first one, 23 QSOs is totally solid especially if you're new to portable ops. the log upload — you've got a few days, i think technically its pretty flexible but most people try to do it within a day or two while everything is fresh. just go to the POTA website, create an account if you havent already and there's an upload section, it takes ADIF format which most logging programs export automatically.

for spotting, the easiest thing is the POTA Spots app or just go to pota.app and you can self-spot right from there. put in your callsign, the park reference, your frequency and mode and boom, hunters can see you. a lot of people also announce on the POTA facebook group or the subreddit the day before if they want a bigger pileup. once you get comfortable with it you can also ask someone to spot you via a QSO which is handy if your phone signal is bad out there. sounds like you had a great time, that random wire setup works way better than people expect

oh man i remember my first activation, i also forgot to self spot and just sat there wondering why nobody was calling me lol. took me like 45 minutes to figure out the app. the spotting thing makes a huge difference, like night and day. once i spotted myself i went from nothing to a pileup in maybe 3 minutes. 40m was definitely my bread and butter for a long time too, 20m can be hit or miss depending on conditions and time of day. if you go out around mid morning local time 20m usually opens up pretty well. also if your park happens to be a two-fer or more, like multiple park references overlap, make sure you log it under all of them, some parks are actually inside other parks and hunters really love those
