vanity callsign process — how long does this actually take

so i passed my general back in august and ive been sitting on my sequential callsign for a few months now. its not terrible but honestly its kind of a mouthful when im doing SSB and i keep having to repeat it. a buddy at the club mentioned i should look into getting a vanity call but i honestly have no idea how that process works or how long it takes.

from what i understand you apply through the FCC ULS system and there's like a waiting period? i tried reading through some stuff online but some of it seems really outdated, people talking about fees and then other pages saying theres no fee anymore so im not sure what the current situation is. also do you just pick any callsign thats available or is there a whole system to it based on your license class

any help appreciated, i dont want to mess this way up and end up in some weird limbo with my license

yeah the vanity process is actually not too bad once you understand how it works. basically you go into the FCC ULS, file a modification to your existing license, and request up to 25 specific callsigns in order of preference. the system then goes through a 18-day filing window — actually i think it used to be 30 days but they changed it — and at the end of that window if your top pick is available and nobody with a higher preference claim (like a close relative of a former holder or whatever) grabbed it, you get it. fee was eliminated a few years ago so thats one less thing to worry about.

as for callsigns available to you, it depends on your license class. as a general you can hold a 2x3 format in most districts, or a 1x3. extras get access to the shorter ones like 1x2 and 2x1 formats. theres a site called AE7Q that a lot of people use to search available calls and see when callsigns are coming up — highly recommend poking around there before you apply so you go in with good options on your list

went through this myself earlier this year. the 18 day wait feels like forever lol but honestly it went fine. I used AE7Q like everyone says and just made a list of calls i liked, put them in order on the application and waited. got my second choice which im pretty happy with. just make sure the callsigns you pick are actually in the right format for your license class or the system will just reject em, learned that the hard way on my first attempt
