anyone else do the Thursday night 40m net? wondering about special event stuff too

so ive been checking into the regional 40m net on thursday nights for about three months now and honestly its become one of my favorite parts of the hobby. started doing it just to practice my exchange and get comfortable with net control procedures but now i actually look forward to it every week. the guys on there are really welcoming especially to newer hams which i wasnt expecting honestly.

anyway my actual question is about special event stations. i saw someone in the net mention a special event callsign last week and i missed most of what they said because the QSB was pretty bad that night. are special event stations usually announced through nets like that or is there a better way to find out whats coming up? i know about the ARRL website but i feel like i always find out about events after they already happened. also do special event stations usually show up in the nets or are they more of a standalone thing where you just have to hunt for them on the band?

sorry if this is kind of a rambling question, just curious how other people keep track of this stuff

yeah the thursday night nets are great, i think i know which one you're talking about actually. for special event stations the best way ive found is just bookmarking the ARRL special event page and checking it maybe once a week, they list everything coming up usually a few weeks in advance. also a lot of clubs will announce their special event activations through their local nets so you're already in the right place for that.

the W1AW operating schedule is worth knowing too if you havent looked at that yet, its not exactly a special event but its kind of a landmark station that a lot of people like to work especially newer hams. as for showing up in nets, it kind of depends -- sometimes a special event station will check into a net just to spread the word but mostly you're hunting for them on the bands yourself. parksontheair and summitsontheair activations get announced on their own apps and sites which is super helpful, those communities are really active about posting their schedules ahead of time.

ive missed so many special events because i found out too late lol. someone in my club told me about a railroad anniversary special event station like two days after it ended and i was pretty bummed about that one. i started following a couple ham radio groups on facebook and that actually helps more than i expected, people post about upcoming stuff pretty regularly there.

also some of the nets i check into on 2m have a "announcements" section at the end where net control specifically asks if anyone has club news or upcoming events, might be worth sticking around for that part if your net does something similar. the 40m nets ive been on tend to move a little faster so that part gets skipped sometimes when conditions are rough
