first SOTA activation this weekend - nervous about the summit reference thing

so ive been chasing summits for about six months now and finally decided to just go do an activation myself. picked out W6/NS-267 which is a pretty easy hike near me, nothing crazy, just wanted to start somewhere manageable before i try anything with real elevation gain.

my question is about logging the summit reference properly. when i self-spot on SOTAwatch do i just type the reference exactly as it appears on the database, like W6/NS-267, and then list my frequency and mode? ive seen some activators put extra notes in the spot and some dont bother. also not sure if i need to pre-announce on the reflector or if just showing up on the air and spotting myself is fine.

planning to run my KX2 with a linked dipole, maybe 10 watts into a thrown-up wire. did a few POTA activations so im not totally green but SOTA feels a bit more... i dont know, official somehow? like people are actually watching SOTAwatch and will call in right away which is both exciting and kind of terrifying

any tips from people whove done a bunch of these would be great

dont overthink the spotting, honestly. yes just use the exact reference from the database and list your freq and mode, thats all you really need. the system will do the rest and chasers monitor SOTAwatch pretty closely so youll get calls pretty quick once you self-spot. some activators do post an alert a day or two ahead on the site so chasers in different timezones can plan around it, especially if they want an S2S contact, but its not required at all. plenty of people just show up and self-spot and that works fine.

the KX2 with a linked dipole is a solid setup for this, ive done a lot of activations with almost exactly that combo. just make sure you get your four contacts to qualify the summit and after that its all gravy. good luck up there, W6 has some really fun summits

oh man i remember my first activation, i was so worried about everything going wrong and then the pile got pretty big and i forgot to be nervous haha. one thing i wish someone told me - have your grid square and summit reference written on a piece of paper in front of you because when youre juggling the radio and logging and trying to hear callsigns through qsb your brain just goes blank sometimes. super basic thing but it helped me a lot on my second one when i finally did it.
