bands have been weird lately — is it just me or is solar flux actually doing something interesting

so ive been noticing some really odd stuff on 10 and 12 meters the past couple weeks. like i'll tune around midday and hear basically nothing for an hour, then out of nowhere there's stations from japan and australia just pouring in like its 1999 or something. lasted maybe 40 minutes yesterday then gone again. i know solar flux has been climbing but i didnt expect it to be this patchy and unpredictable.

been watching the SFI on DXWatch and it was sitting around 170-180 last week which honestly seems pretty high compared to what we had for most of last couple years. K index was low too so i figured conditions would be more stable than this but apparently not? or maybe im misunderstanding how all that works together. anyway just wondering if anyone else is seeing these random short openings or if im just getting lucky with my timing

yeah 10m has been doing exactly that, these burst openings that come and go real fast. what youre probably seeing is a mix of F2 propagation and maybe some sporadic-E thrown in, especially if the path to JA or VK seems unusually short on timing. F2 at this point in the solar cycle can be really good but it doesnt always mean a steady open band — it kind of moves around depending on where the solar zenith angle is and how the ionosphere is structured that day. the SFI being in the 170s is genuinely solid, we havent had consistent numbers like that in a while. i'd keep an eye on the geomagnetic stuff too though because even a moderate K index can knock out the higher bands fast. honestly just be ready to jump when you see a cluster of spots come through because like you said those windows can close quick

same thing happened to me tuesday, i was on 10m just kind of halfheartedly calling CQ and then all of a sudden i worked like 8 DX stations in 20 minutes including a ZL which i had never worked before on any band. then it just died. my neighbor who's been a ham for 30 years said this is actually pretty normal for where we are in the solar cycle and that we should expect more of these random good openings through the next year or two as we head toward the solar maximum. i didnt really understand all the details he explained but it made me want to actually start checking propagation forecasts before i just randomly sit down at the radio
