anyone else get into the weekly nets? trying to figure out where to start

so ive been licensed for about 4 months now (general class) and i keep hearing people talk about checking into nets but honestly the whole thing is a bit confusing to me. like i know theres a net control station and you check in and say your callsign but beyond that i dont really know the etiquette or how to find whats actually active in my area or on hf.

i tried jumping into something that sounded like a net on 40m last week and i think i messed up the timing or something because the net control acknowledged like 3 other stations and i never heard my call come back. not sure if i was too early, too late, or just buried under QRM. kind of embarrassing honestly.

also saw something about a special event station for a lighthouse activation coming up next month and thought that might be fun to try. do those operate the same way as a normal net or is it more just a regular contact situation? any advice appreciated

dont sweat the 40m thing, that happens to everyone starting out. propagation can be really uneven and sometimes the net control just flat out cant pull you out of the noise even if you did everything right. best thing to do is listen to a full net session before you try checking in again, just to get a feel for the pacing and how net control handles the list.

for finding nets, the ARRL has a net directory but honestly i find it kind of outdated. better bet is to ask around your local club or just monitor the popular frequencies at the same time each week and see what pops up. most nets run on a pretty rigid schedule. the 7.268 afternoon net has been running forever if youre on 40m.

the lighthouse event stations are a totally different vibe, theres no formal check-in or anything like that, you just call them like any other station and exchange a signal report and maybe your state or grid square depending on what theyre collecting. much more relaxed than a formal net. world lighthouse on the air weekend is a good one to look for.

oh man i was in the exact same spot like a year ago. what helped me was actually finding a net that does an echolink or winlink option so i could listen on my computer first without tying up my radio. kind of cheating maybe but it let me hear what a proper check-in sounded like before i tried it live.

also some nets have a specific window where they take mobile and low power stations separately which is nice if you're running qrp or have a compromised antenna situaton like me lol. just worth knowing thats a thing
