first SOTA activation next weekend, what am I forgetting

so ive been chasing summits for about 8 months now and finally decided to stop being a couch activator and actually get out there. signed up for W6/NC-270 which is a 6 point summit not too far from me, moderate hike, shouldnt be too brutal. got my KX2 and a linked dipole im borrowing from a buddy, gonna run it off a 3ah lipo and hope for the best.

my plan is to self spot via the SOTA watch app once i get to the activation zone, work at least 4 contacts to validate it (i know i know, the minimum) and then try to get a few S2S contacts if anything is on the cluster. im bringing the 20 and 40m links and might try 30 if the bands are weird.

thing is i feel like im forgetting something obvious. ive watched like a dozen youtube videos and read the reflector posts but i always feel like there's some dumb thing nobody mentions. anyone done NC-270 specifically or just have tips for a first activation in general? my callsign is in my profile if anyone wants to chase me, ill post my expected summit time on SOTAwatch the night before.

NC-270 is a great first pick, not too exposed at the top so if weather rolls in you have some tree cover. one thing people dont always mention is the activation zone is bigger than you think, you dont have to be standing on the absolute highest rock, just within 25 vertical meters of the summit. so if you find a nice flat spot to set up that isnt the peak itself thats totally fine.

also seriously bring more wire than you think you need for your antenna. and a sharpie to mark your summit reference on your log sheet if you go paper. small thing but ive shown up before and blanked on the exact reference number mid-activation which is embarrassing. the sota database has all the details but you want it written down somewhere offline.

sounds like you have the basics dialed in honestly. post your SOTAwatch alert and youll probably get a pile-up faster than you expect, chasers are hungry these days especially on weekday activations when there isnt much happening.

oh man i remember my first activation i forgot a pen to log contacts with lol. went paper because my phone died in the cold. ended up scratching callsigns into the dirt with a stick which obviously didnt work. bring a pen, maybe two pens, spare batteries for anything that takes them, and honestly snacks because once you start working a pile-up you forget to eat and then the hike back is miserable.

good luck, hope you get your 4 and then some. S2S contacts are so satisfying, theres something about knowing the other person is also freezing on a mountaintop that makes it feel real.
