first time checking into a net and i completely froze up lol

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into our local 2m weekly net last tuesday and honestly it did not go the way i hoped. i had my call sign ready, knew the frequency, had the repeater tones programmed in fine, but when the net control called for check-ins i just kind of... blanked. i gave my call and then when he came back to me and asked for my name and location i stumbled over my words and said my city wrong at first then corrected myself and it was just embarrassing. nobody said anything mean or anything but i felt like an idiot.

anyway my question is basically - is there like an unwritten script people follow for nets? i know every net is a little different but is there some standard way you're supposed to respond when net control comes back to you? i feel like if i just knew what words to expect and what words to say back it would go a lot smoother. also is it weird to just listen to a bunch of nets before checking in just to get a feel for how it goes? i did that for a few weeks before trying but still wasnt totally prepared i guess

oh man i remember my first net check-in, i think i gave my call sign twice by accident and then said "over" like i was on CB radio or something. nobody cared at all. the thing about nets is that net control has heard everything, they're not judging you, they're just trying to run through the list efficiently.

most voice nets follow a pretty loose pattern - net control calls for check-ins, you give your call sign (phonetics help if the band is noisy), they acknowledge you and usually ask for name and QTH, you give those, maybe mention if you have traffic or if you're just checking in for the count, and that's basically it for a lot of casual nets. some nets have more structure than that like directed nets where you only transmit when called upon, but your basic weekly 2m social net is usually pretty relaxed. just listen a couple more times and you'll have the rhythm down fast. and yeah listening first is exactly the right move, you did nothing wrong there.

dont worry about it, everyone fumbles the first few times. i checked into my first net and completely forgot to wait for the squelch tail before transmitting and ended up doubling with someone else checking in at the same time. net control just asked us both to re-send and moved on. its really not a big deal at all. the nets around here at least are super forgiving of new folks, thats kind of the whole point of them honestly.
