APRS TNC Configuration Issue: Can't Get My Kenwood TM-710G to Decode Packets Properly

I'm having trouble getting my Kenwood TM-710G to decode APRS packets consistently. I can see packets coming in on the display (the PKT indicator lights up), but they either show garbled text or don't decode at all. I've set the TNC mode to PACKET, frequency to 144.390 MHz, and baud rate to 1200. The DCD lamp on the radio lights up when I hear APRS traffic, but I'm only getting about 30% decode success. Has anyone else encountered this issue with the TM-710G's built-in TNC?

Check if your receiver volume is set high enough so that the DCD lamp lights whenever there is received data, and verify proper decoding by observing if error-free packets are displayed. Often audio level issues cause this exact symptom.

I had the same problem! Turn off any DSP noise reduction or filtering on the radio - the TM-710G's built-in filters can sometimes interfere with 1200 baud AFSK decoding. Also try adjusting the squelch threshold.
