  1. yeah the stock mic on the 7300 is pretty mediocre, most people ditch it pretty quick. but before you buy anything new honestly go into the menu and pull up the TX monitor so you can actually hear yourself on the air, thats the first thing. a lot of guys dont realize how bad their audio is until they listen to it themselves. for the ALC issue — you want that meter barely ticking, like just kissing the bottom of the ALC range when you talk loud. if its bouncing hard youre overdriving it and that will make you sound like garbage and also splatter onto adjacent freqs which nobody appreciates. back the mic gain down until the ALC is calm, then adjust from there. the parametric EQ is worth learning, i know its a pain but even just boosting the 2-3kHz range a little and rolling off some of the low end under 200Hz makes a huge difference for voice clarity. SSB bandwidth is limited anyway so you dont need all that bass rumble eating up your passband. also are you talking too close to the mic? distance matters more than people think, like 2-3 inches is usually good, closer than that and you get proximity effect making everything boomy.
  2. so ive been licensed for about eight months now and have just been using a vertical whip that came with my radio but i really want to try building something myself. ive been reading about half wave dipoles all week and i think i understand the basic concept — two equal legs, fed at the center, total length roughly 468 divided by frequency in MHz. im planning to build one for 40m so that puts me at around 66 feet total which is going to be a bit of a stretch in my backyard but i think i can do an inverted V off a tree. my main questions are around the feedpoint. im planning to use some RG-8X i have laying around and i know i need a balun or at least a choke to keep RF off the coax shield but im not totally sure if a simple coax choke (just winding the feedline into a coil) is good enough or if i should build or buy a proper 1:1 current balun. also how critical is the height of the center feed point for 40m — i have a tree thats maybe 30 feet tall so center would be at like 28 feet with the legs sloping down at whatever angle that works out to. ive seen people say anything under a half wavelength high is compromised but not sure how bad were talking for a general purpose HF setup. not contesting just want to get on 40m SSB and maybe some casual CW. using 14 gauge stranded copper from the hardware store for the wire, is that fine or do i need something specific
  3. yeah the cycle 25 has been really surprising a lot of people, including me honestly. i've been at this since the 90s and cycle 24 was such a dud that i think a lot of hams just got used to mediocre conditions. this one has overperformed the predictions pretty consistently. for the sfi stuff, rough rule of thumb is anything above 150 and 10m starts getting interesting, above 180 and you can have openings that almost feel like VHF, super strong signals and big pileups on the DX. the k-index is basically measuring how disturbed the earth's magnetic field is from solar wind. low k (like 0-2) means the ionosphere is nice and stable and signals refract off it predictably. when k gets up to 4 or 5 or higher, especially at higher latitudes, the bands can just fall apart. you'll hear guys on 40m or 80m complaining the noise floor jumped and their signal reports tanked, that's usually a geomagnetic thing. keep an eye on dxmaps.com and the DX cluster when the sfi is high, 10m and even 6m can light up fast and you want to catch it early before everyone piles on
  4. yeah 10m has been on fire, caught a bunch of european stations on my end wednesday morning which was unexpected since i usually dont bother checking above 20m until later in the solar cycle. worked a handful of spanish stations and even got a weak contact into italy which made my day honestly. the radio you're probably thinking of is the new IC-7760 or something close to that, there was a thread on one of the other forums with the full spec sheet. people are going back and forth about whether the price point makes sense compared to just buying used at this point but it looks like a solid radio from what i skimmed. i'll try to find the link later if i remember.
