first WWFF activation coming up, what am I getting myself into
hey good question and congrats on branching out. so yeah the 10 QSO minimum is a POTA thing, for WWFF you actually need 44 contacts to get a valid activation logged and credited — which threw me off the first time too. it sounds like a lot but honestly on a decent weekend with 40m or 20m open you can knock that out in under an hour if youre calling CQ consistently and spot yourself on the WWFF cluster. the log format is adif and you upload to wwff.us, pretty painless. callsign is just your normal callsign, no portable suffix required although some people add /P out of habit or because theyre operating from another country. make sure your log has the WWFF reference in the right field — i think its the SIG_INFO field in adif if you're using something like Log4OM or ADIF master. most of the common logging apps handle it fine now. the nature reference categories are fun to browse too, you get stuff like wetlands, national forests, nature reserves all with different KFF numbers. have a good one out there

I used HamStudy.org's mobile app to take practice tests during my commute - made great use of dead time. Flashcards are great for memorization, you can make your own using Quizlet. Took me about 3 weeks of consistent daily study.

Battery life comparison - which HTs actually deliver on their claims?
In my testing, the Ailunce HD1 with its large 3,200mAh battery can last up to a week without charging in DMR mode with moderate use. The Kenwood TH-D75A with native FM, D-STAR, and APRS plus onboard GPS and USB-C charging gives me about 12-14 hours of mixed use.

thinking about upgrading to General, how hard is the exam really
2-3 weeks is plenty if you actually sit down and do it. honestly the General pool isnt dramatically harder than Tech, theres just more of it. the band privileges stuff you'll pick up pretty fast because it actually makes sense once you see why the bands are split up the way they are. the part that trips people up is usually the electrical theory, like the reactance and impedance stuff. if you glazed over that on the Tech exam it comes back with a vengeance on General lol i used hamexam.org and just drilled practice tests every night for like two weeks. by the end i was consistently hitting 85-90% and i passed no problem. the real exam felt easier than the practice ones honestly. dont overthink the band plan stuff, they basically ask you things like what frequencies are phone privs on 40m for general class, and if you just use the bands a little before the test it kind of sticks naturally

first time trying LEO sats with a linear transponder — confused about doppler tuning
the 2003 wiki comment made me laugh because yeah some of that stuff really hasnt been updated. one thing that helped me was just finding a strong signal on the transponder passband — like someone already in a QSO — and tuning around them first so i could hear what full quieting sounds like before i even tried transmitting. gives you a reference point. also worth double checking your TLE files are fresh, stale keplerian elements will make the tracking drift and if gpredict is pointing your rotator slightly wrong that compounds everything. i update mine every few days when im actively doing sat work

getting better audio on SSB — what actually makes a difference
the stock mic on the 7300 is honestly fine for getting on the air but if audio quality matters to you its probably the first thing worth upgrading. i switched to a Heil PR-781 a while back and the difference was pretty immediate, just more clarity in the midrange. though you do have to watch the gain on those dynamic elements, they can overdrive the front end if you're not careful. one thing nobody mentions enough — where your mic is positioned matters a LOT. talking across the mic instead of directly into it, keeping it maybe 2 inches away, makes a noticeable difference in reducing plosives and that boomy bass buildup from proximity effect. sounds obvious but i used to just shove it right up to my face and wonder why i sounded like i was calling from inside a tin can

first time trying LEO linear transponders and im completely lost on the doppler thing
so ive been playing with FO-29 and AO-7 for a few weeks now using my ic-9700 and a pair of arrow antennas handheld which i know isnt ideal but its what i have. got the basic FM birds figured out pretty quick, SO-50 and those are easy enough. but i wanted to try the linear transponders because everyone says thats where the real operating is. the problem is the doppler correction is driving me insane. i understand the concept, uplink and downlink shift in opposite directions on a linear transponder, so you cant just throw a single doppler correction at the whole thing like you can with a FM bird. im using gpredict for tracking which is solid but im still losing my own signal constantly. i tune around on the downlink trying to find myself and by the time i do the pass is half over. is there a trick to this that im missing or do i just need more practice. feels like everyone else makes it look easy in the videos i watch but in practice its chaos trying to hold the antenna, watch the screen, and tune simultaneously. do most people run this stuff full duplex or are some people actually doing it simplex and just getting lucky
