  1. I help with Elmering at our club and see this too. The schematic diagram questions throw people off, especially identifying basic components. The current Technician pool has three schematic diagrams and it's valid until June 30, 2026. Practice identifying resistors, capacitors, and inductors in circuit symbols - it comes up more than you'd think.
  2. yeah what he said. also some nets have a specific website or facebook group where they post the net format, might be worth checking if your local club has one. i checked into my first net super nervous and all net control said was "copy, welcome" and moved on. totally anticlimactic in the best way lol. also theres special event stations and on-air events sometimes that are even more forgiving because theres so much activity going on nobody cares if you stumble a bit. those are actually great practice if you ever see one advertised.
  3. yeah the vanity process can be a little confusing at first but its pretty straightforward once you get it. so expired calls do go into a pool but theres a 2 year waiting period after a callsign cancels before its available for vanity applications — used to be shorter i think but they changed it at some point. you can check availability using a site like AE7Q, way easier than trying to parse the FCC ULS directly, it'll tell you exactly when a call becomes eligible as for cost, yes the FCC does charge now for the application, i want to say it was around $35 but double check that because it may have gone up. that applies to vanity applications too. you just file through the ULS online system, pick your preferred calls in order of preference and then wait. processing is usually pretty quick these days, sometimes just a day or two if everything is in order. one thing — make sure the call you want matches your license class, you cant apply for a 1x2 or 2x1 format on a general if you dont qualify for it based on your district and class
  4. this is actually really helpful to read, im a newer ham and just joined my county ARES group a few months ago and didnt really know what to expect from a SET. the inject idea sounds kind of intense but i get why it would work better than just pretending everything goes smoothly. quick question — when you say you lost contact with the EOC, was that simulated or did something actually fail? asking because i wasnt sure if in these exercises you're supposed to let real problems happen or if everything is kind of scripted.
  5. so i got my general ticket back in the spring and ive been mostly just ragchewing on 40m and doing some SOTA activations when the weather is nice. a buddy at my club keeps telling me i need to try CQ WW this fall and honestly it sounds fun but also kind of overwhelming like i get the basic idea, you work as many stations as possible across different zones and you log everything. but i dont really understand the exchange format, like what am i actually supposed to be sending and receiving, and does it matter if i mess it up. also is it worth even getting on with a 100w setup and a wire antenna or is it basically hopeless against all the big gun stations running amps ive also heard Field Day mentioned a lot and i know thats more of a club event but i missed it this year. is that a better starting point for someone new to contesting or is it just completely different anyway any advice for a first timer would be really appreciated, especially if someones gone through this same thing
