Identify the exact radio and its operating role

Elecraft KX2 is covered as a HF amateur transceiver. Begin with the complete model and regional suffix on the unit. Match the manual, hardware revision and software before changing a configuration.

KX2 covers 80–10 meters, not six meters. KXUSB carries control data rather than USB sound-card audio. Computer data modes require separate receive/transmit audio paths. Use DATA A for sound-card modes. The owner manual specifies no more than four to five ALC bars for audio data. With an MH3 microphone, MIC BIAS is ON and MIC BTN is PTT UP.DN. Follow the exact battery/charger instructions.

Prepare a safe and recoverable setup

Use only the radio service and channels for which the actual unit and your operation are authorized. Receive coverage, frequency-copy functions and expanded-range advertisements do not grant permission to transmit.

  • Keep the exact manual, a notebook and a copy of the original configuration available. Do not start by resetting a working radio.
  • Inspect the power connector, supply specification, fuse, antenna connector and cables. A plug that fits is not proof of correct voltage, polarity or pinout.
  • Charging, memory programming, CAT control and digital audio are separate jobs. Identify which function each cable or wireless connection actually provides.
  • For vehicle use, mount equipment securely, protect wiring as specified and keep it clear of controls and airbags. Program and test while parked.
  • Preserve borrowed or club configurations. Another owner’s codeplug can contain private IDs, location settings or channels that are inappropriate for your operation.

First start: establish a working receiver

  1. Check the specified supply voltage, polarity, fuse and connector with the radio off. Provide ventilation and keep a disconnected amplifier out of the first test.
  2. Connect the correct antenna system or a suitable dummy load. Check the selected antenna port and coax. A tuner cannot repair damaged coax.
  3. Start in receive, with PTT released, VOX off, split off and automatic software transmission disabled. Record the original settings.
  4. Select a supported band and receive mode, tune a known signal and adjust volume and filtering for intelligibility.
  5. Verify the transmit VFO independently of the receive display. Set low output for the first authorized test.
  6. Save the working baseline before adding computer control or an amplifier.

First contact, microphone and antenna checks

Choose a supported band, an authorized frequency and the appropriate mode. Listen first, inspect the transmit VFO and start without an amplifier, aggressive voice processing or software automation.

  1. Check the antenna match at modest power using the documented tune/meter procedure. An internal or external tuner matches a load within limits; it does not repair damaged coax or remove feedline loss.
  2. Choose the correct microphone input and speak normally. Adjust gain using this model’s specified meter indication instead of assuming one ALC rule applies to all radios.
  3. Ask a cooperating operator for an audio report. Change microphone distance, gain, processing or filtering one at a time and save the useful result.
  4. For CW, select the correct key type, speed, sidetone and break-in behavior. Confirm that plugging in the key does not leave the transmitter keyed.
  5. After the contact, check the log and return split or special settings to a known state. Save the station configuration before adding more functions.

Separate CAT, audio and PTT

CAT/controlCarries frequency, mode and commands. A detected serial port proves only that a device was recognized.
Receive/transmit audioCarries modem tones. Some radios expose USB audio; others require a separate sound interface and correct audio wiring.
PTT/keyingChanges receive/transmit state through a supported CAT, serial or dedicated path. It must not key unexpectedly when the port opens.

Use the exact-model connection notes above and the operating manual. A memory-programming socket is not automatically live CAT, and a USB host socket is not interchangeable with a computer-facing device port.

Write down the actual port, driver/profile, serial settings, sound input/output and PTT method. COM numbers and audio names belong to your computer, so copying a presenter’s COM number is not radio configuration. Let only one application own a serial port unless a documented sharing service is in use.

WSJT-X: FT8/FT4 from receive to first contact

  1. Install a supported release from the WSJT-X project. Enter your own call sign and grid and synchronize the computer clock. Leave automatic transmission disabled during setup.
  2. In Settings → Radio choose a supported exact-model driver, the actual control port and the documented serial/handshake settings. If using a supported flrig bridge, let it own the port and choose the bridge in the client instead of opening the same port twice.
  3. Use Test CAT and confirm that the displayed radio and software frequencies agree. CAT success does not prove correct audio or PTT.
  4. In Settings → Audio choose the actual radio/interface receive input and transmit output. Avoid default computer microphone/speaker routing. Confirm a sensible receive level, a real waterfall and successful decodes without input clipping.
  5. Select the appropriate data/sideband mode and the documented transmit input. Disable voice processing inappropriate for data. For KX2/KX3, follow the specific ALC instruction above rather than a generic zero-ALC recommendation.
  6. At low power into a suitable load or on a clear authorized frequency, use a short supported PTT/tune test. Adjust audio according to this radio’s manual. Stop if opening the port causes continuous transmission, reset or abnormal output.
  7. Make a controlled first contact, check the log and save the software profile with the radio/interface notes.

When CAT works but decoding fails, test receive audio and timing. When decoding works but no RF is produced, test transmit input, PTT and audio routing. When RF is present but contacts fail, check time, frequency, passband, antenna and signal quality before increasing power.

fldigi and flrig: choose one control path

fldigi supplies modem functions; flrig is a separate radio controller. Use a supported direct control route or a documented flrig bridge. Multiple programs competing for the serial port are a common source of intermittent failures.

  1. If using flrig, select the supported radio, actual port and documented parameters with fldigi closed. Confirm frequency/mode tracking first.
  2. Set fldigi to use that controller’s documented interface, or use its supported direct driver instead. Configure receive and transmit sound devices separately.
  3. Choose an appropriate modem mode and bandwidth and first decode a known signal. Change receive level and filtering deliberately; a brighter waterfall is not proof of better decoding.
  4. Perform a brief low-power transmit/audio test. Avoid speech compression, automatic audio enhancements and excessive input drive.
  5. Save the working setup and record which application owns CAT and which owns audio. Close programs cleanly before changing control applications.

JS8Call, Winlink and logging integration

JS8CallConfigure station identity, clock, supported control profile and audio devices within JS8Call. A WSJT-X profile is a useful reference, not an automatic configuration. Keep heartbeat and other automatic transmission functions off until deliberately chosen.
Winlink Express / supported modemChoose the transport first. Internet-only sessions need no radio; an HF session needs a compatible modem, control/audio path and suitable gateway. Confirm privileges, mode and gateway procedure. Begin with a small test message and diagnose a failed RF path before repeated retries.
N1MM Logger+ / other loggerBegin with receive-only frequency/mode tracking. Add CW keying or voice playback only after checking interface and PTT behavior. Use a documented CAT-sharing method if a modem and logger both need control.
Firmware utilityAn updater is not a station controller. Close other radio applications, verify the exact hardware/package and follow the manufacturer’s power and recovery requirements.

Troubleshooting without losing a working setup

  • No sound: check volume, squelch, headphones, selected operating side and antenna. A muted receiver is not automatically a hardware failure.
  • Can hear but cannot be heard: verify transmit frequency, tone, mode, power source and antenna. Test with one known station and identify properly.
  • Programming cannot connect: confirm exact model, cable, port, driver and transfer state. Close other programs that may own the interface.
  • Wrong frequencies after import: check units, region, split/offset and the target file. Stop transmitting until the recalled settings match the intended plan.
  • Unexpected transmit: stop software or release PTT, return to receive and inspect VOX, serial-line keying and automatic functions before resuming.
  • Reset or shutdown on transmit: inspect battery condition or DC voltage under load, connectors and cable sizing. Do not bypass protective fuses.

Write down the symptom, last known working state and one change at a time. Make a backup before a reset; a reset removes evidence about the original cause and may erase valuable memories.

Practice setup, verification and recovery

  1. Explain the complete signal path: antenna and receiver, selected channel/mode, audio to the listener and, where fitted, the authorized transmit path. Identify the parts that need installed options or external equipment.
  2. Save a small known-good configuration, change one harmless receive setting and recover the original. Inspect the recovered values rather than relying on the filename.
  3. Test with a known active receive source or cooperating operator and write down the evidence that each part works.
  4. Keep original and current configuration copies separately, with model, revision, cable/app details and source dates. Do not put credentials, private IDs or location history in public examples.

Backups, updates and long-term ownership

Keep at least two copies of the original and current configuration in separate locations. Record the model suffix, region, serial number privately, installed options, firmware and programmer version. Do not put credentials, personal contact lists or location history into public example files.

For firmware work, download only the exact model’s release from the manufacturer, read its prerequisites and recovery instructions, and provide the required stable power. A similarly named radio’s firmware is not an upgrade path. Check batteries and cables first; do not start an update immediately before an event.

Inspect antenna and accessory connectors, strain relief, battery contacts or DC leads, and cooling paths regularly. Follow the manual for cleaning and water exposure. Dry equipment before opening covers or charging; a weather rating is not permission to ignore connector protection.

For a used purchase, ask for a receive demonstration, authorized low-power transmit test into a suitable load, memory recall and computer communication where supported. Confirm what options and cables are included. Do not mistake missing software or an unsupported cable for a failed radio.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a file from a similar radio?

Use the exact model/revision workflow. Import individual channel information only through a supported conversion path; do not cross-write a complete radio image.

Does USB always carry radio audio?

No. Charging, programming, CAT and audio are separate functions. Identify the model’s actual connection and the devices exposed to the computer.

Should I reset the radio to fix a problem?

Save its setup and diagnose the last change first. Use the manufacturer’s recovery procedure only when you can restore the required configuration.

Can software add a missing band or mode?

A configuration file does not establish unsupported hardware capability or operating authorization. Use the exact unit’s documentation and the conditions of the radio service.

Compare the demonstrated model, firmware, cable and region with your own station. A presenter’s port number, channel, ID or microphone level is an example rather than a universal setting. Follow the exact manual when controls differ.
