so ive been a general for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the extra. i mostly do HF, some digital, occasional ssb on 40 and 20. the privileges on the extra are appealing obviously especially that little slice on the lower end of 40 where the dx pileups always seem to be happening when im trying to break in with my general privileges

but ive been looking at some of the practice questions online and some of that theory stuff is... a lot. like the filter design questions and the transmission line stuff and theres some RF propagation math that i honestly dont remember from school. im not an engineer or anything, just a regular guy who got into the hobby a few years back. anyone go through this recently and can give me a realistic idea of what i was getting myself into before i buy a study guide

went through it last spring. honestly the theory scared me too when i first looked at the question pool but after a few weeks with the hamstudy website it started clicking. the math isnt as bad as it looks because most of the questions are really just testing if you recognize what the formula is, not like actually solving problems from scratch. the transmission line stuff and the filter Q factor questions tripped me up at first but if you just drill the questions enough the patterns become familiar.

the extra privileges are worth it imo. the phone sub-bands are nice but the real reason i wanted it was cw at the bottom of the bands, thats where all the good stuff is. took me about 6 weeks of casual studying maybe 20 minutes a night and passed first try. dont overthink it just start with hamstudy and see how youre scoring after a week or two.

the part that got me was the amplifier and oscillator theory, like the stuff about feedback and why certain circuits oscilate. i kept mixing that up. but yeah the dx windows alone made it worth it for me, i was SO frustrated sitting just outside the general phone limit watching guys work rare entities on 14.150 or whatever
