ok so ive been licensed for about 4 months now and i still feel kinda awkward about when to use the NATO phonetics vs just saying the letter. like if someone asks me to confirm a callsign do i spell out every single letter with alpha bravo charlie etc or is that overkill sometimes? i was on a local 2m net last week and i just said my callsign normally and the net control asked me to say it again with phonetics and i felt a little embarrassed but also wasnt sure if that was just his preference or like an actual rule. also i keep blanking on X and Q for some reason, i know its xray and quebec but in the moment my brain just goes blank. does that happen to anyone else or is it just me being dumb about this

yeah Q and X trip everyone up at first, dont sweat it. Quebec and Xray are just weird ones to remember. I used to write them on a sticky note on my radio until they stuck in my head, took maybe a month of regular operating before it felt natural.

as for when to use phonetics -- honestly on a clear local repeater with someone you talk to every week you probably dont need to spell out every letter, people will know who you are. but any time theres noise, when youre making a new contact, calling CQ, or especially if you ever get into HF where conditions can be rough, phonetics are just good practice. net control probably just wanted to make sure he logged your call correctly, not a big deal. better to get in the habit early anyway.

honestly i still blank on Juliett sometimes, like my brain wants to say Juliet without the second T and then i second guess myself mid-transmission which is probably worse than just saying the wrong thing lol. been licensed 3 years. the phonetic alphabet is one of those things that feels like it should be easy and then just isnt under pressure.
