so i passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and my callsign finally showed up in the ULS database, which is exciting. but now im reading about vanity callsigns and im honestly more confused than before i started reading lol

from what i understand the FCC just assigns you whatever sequential callsign is next in line for your district, which is what happened to me, i got a 2x3 format with my region number. but people keep mentioning applying for a vanity call and im not totally sure when you can do that or if theres a waiting period or what. like can i just apply right now for a different callsign i like better, or do i have to wait some amount of time first?

also is there any cost involved, i saw something about $35 but wasnt sure if thats for vanity specifically or just the license renewal thing they started charging for. anyway any help appreciated, still figuring all this out

congrats on passing the test. so yeah you can apply for a vanity callsign pretty much anytime after your license shows up in the system, theres no mandatory waiting period after getting your initial sequential call. the $35 fee applies to all license applications now including vanity, the FCC started that a couple years back. used to be free which was nice but what can you do.

the way vanity works is you submit an application through the FCC's ULS system and list up to 25 callsigns you want, in order of preference. then theres a 30 day filing window and if nobody with a higher preference claim puts in for the same call (like a close relative of a former holder), and nobody else applied for it before you, you get it. 1x2 and 2x1 format calls are harder to snag obviously since everyone wants those short ones, but 1x3 or 2x2 calls in less popular districts can be pretty easy to get. worth poking around on ae7q.com, thats the go-to site for looking up whats available before you apply

went through this exact thing last year, it's a little confusing at first but once you do it once it makes sense. one thing i'd add is that ae7q dot com is seriously your best friend for this whole process, you can search by format and see which calls are available or in a waiting period after a previous holder let them lapse. some calls have a 2 year wait after the previous licensee passed away before anyone outside the immediate family can apply, so just watch out for that when you're browsing around for ones you like
