Considering adding an RTL-SDR panadapter to my IC-745. The ICOM IC-745 is a durable 1980s HF transceiver, ideal for enthusiasts who enjoy restoration. While lacking modern serial control, it supports digital modes with modifications like sound card connections and frequency stabilization. Enhancements like an RTL-SDR panadapter can also be added. The setup involves connecting the IF output of the radio to the RTL-SDR, and putting in some settings into HDSDR. Has anyone done this mod successfully? What's the actual benefit vs the hassle of IF tap modifications?

Bigger and faster FFT display than almost any radio available, HDSDR in fullscreen. The RTL-SDR can match the performance of the raw audio output, even producing less signal splatter on strong signals due to pure numerical mixing strategies. The visual advantage is significant for digital modes and pile-ups.

I have not been able to get my RTL-SDR to work as a panadapter with my Kenwood TS-570DG or Yaesu FT-920. I have tapped the proper location for the 1st IF and inputted proper frequencies in HDSDR but display shows nothing but random lines. Can be frustrating to get working properly - make sure your tap point and IF frequency are correct.

Use tight bandpass filter such as 3 stage Chebyshev to match IF pass-band. External low noise power supply to dongle - not USB power. USB RF dampening. Metal can enclosures with ground plane. Proper RF design is critical for good results - don't skimp on filtering and isolation.
