so i finally got my general last month and ive been lurking on a few local nets just listening but i want to actually check in and participate. the thing is i dont really know the proper way to do it and i dont want to step on anyone or sound like a complete idiot my first time keying up on a net.

like when the net control calls for check-ins, do you just say your callsign once or twice? do you say your name and location every time or just the first time? i heard someone give a signal report during check-in and wasnt sure if that was expected or just something that guy does. also what happens if two people check in at the same time, does net control sort it out or do you just wait and try again?

i know this is probably super basic stuff but i searched around and couldnt find a straight answer that wasnt like... a 40 page PDF from the 1980s. any help appreciated

dont be embarrassed at all, everyone goes through this. for most casual weekly nets you just say your callsign phonetically once, maybe twice if the band is noisy, and net control will usually acknowledge you and ask for any traffic or comments. some nets want name and location on first check-in, some dont care, honestly the best thing to do is just listen to a few check-ins before yours so you can mirror what everyone else is doing. the net control will usually set the format at the top anyway.

if you and someone else key up at the same time net control will probably hear a mix and just ask for the stations to re-identify, its not a big deal and happens all the time. ive been doing this for like 15 years and still occasionally step on someone. the community is pretty forgiving especially when its clear youre trying to follow proper procedure. just get in there and check in, the worst that happens is you have to say your call again.

yeah what he said. i was terrified my first net check-in too lol. one thing i'll add is some nets have a specific format they announce at the start so if you can catch the first minute or two before check-ins open it usually tells you exactly what they want. i checked into a traffic net once not realizing it was a formal NTS-style net and completely botched it but the net control was super nice and just walked me through it. most hams are pretty patient with newer operators as long as you're making an honest effort
