so ive been trying to wrap my head around winlink for a few weeks now and i think i mostly get it but theres one thing thats still tripping me up. when i connect to an RMS gateway vs doing a direct P2P session, where exactly do the messages end up? like if i send to another ham via an RMS gateway does it go up to the CMS servers and then they pull it down next time they connect, or is it more like it gets relayed immediately somehow

also i got Winlink Express set up and managed to connect to a local gateway on VHF which felt like a win, but i tried sending a test message to my own winlink address and it showed sent but never actually received it on the other end (i was checking via webmail on the winlink.org site). not sure if i did something wrong in the message composition or if theres a delay im not accounting for. my gateway connection said it completed successfully so im not sure whats happening

running a TM-V71A into a signalink for the audio and using VARA FM if that matters. been using 144.990 which i think is the standard simplex frequency for this around here but honestly not 100% sure thats right for my area

yeah the CMS part confuses a lot of people at first. so basically when you connect to an RMS gateway (which is someone elses radio/node that has internet), your message goes from your radio to their station, then from their station up to one of the CMS servers (there are several around the world, they sync to each other). the recipient doesnt get it instantly — they have to connect to any RMS gateway or directly to a telnet node and the CMS pushes the pending messages down to them at that point. so yes theres inherent delay, sometimes hours if the other person doesnt connect often.

for your test to yourself — when you sent it and then checked webmail, did you wait a minute or two? sometimes theres a short delay getting into the CMS. but also make sure your callsign in Winlink Express is entered exactly right including any SSID if you used one. i had a situation where i had a -10 SSID set on one session and nothing on the other and they were treating them as separate accounts basically. the webmail on winlink.org should show everything tied to your callsign regardless of SSID though so that shouldnt be the issue usually.

144.990 is the standard VHF winlink simplex calling frequency yeah, so youre on the right track there. one thing to check is whether the gateway you connected to actually had a working internet link at the time — some of the lesser used gateways go offline or lose their CMS connection without the sysop noticing right away. you can check gateway status on the winlink.org maps page.

VARA FM makes a huge difference over AFSK so good call using that. just one thing i want to add — if you're testing with yourself, make sure you're actually doing a full disconnect and reconnect session to *receive*, not just checking the webmail. the webmail is fine but sometimes i've seen weird caching things where it doesn't refresh immediately. open a fresh session in Winlink Express and do an update and see if the message comes down that way.

also the TM-V71A with signalink is a solid combo, had mine running for two years without issues. only gotcha i found was making sure the VOX delay on the signalink was set right so it wasnt cutting off the tail end of transmissions. might not be your issue here but worth double checking if you ever notice incomplete transfers
