so ive been messing around with remote station control for about 6 months now and i think im finally getting somewhere but i wanted to ask if anyone else is running a RemoteHams SDR setup and also doing internet linking at the same time because im running into some latency weirdness that i cant quite pin down

my setup is basically a SDRplay RSP1A feeding into the RemoteHams client on a remote machine about 40 miles from me, works fine for receive-only stuff and i can tune around and hear everything clearly but when i tried to tie in a linking node (running IRLP on a pi) on the same network as the remote station things get weird — like the audio path seems to develop this double-echo thing that comes and goes, worst when im also pushing PTT through the remote control software

i dont know if its a buffering conflict or if the two systems are fighting over the audio interface or what. the remote machine is running win10, not a lot of resources but nothing that should be taxed by this. anybody dealt with something like this or am i just doing something fundamentally dumb here

yeah this sounds like a classic audio routing mess honestly. when you have two things trying to grab or monitor the same audio device on windows you get exactly that kind of echo artifact, especially if one of them is doing any kind of loopback monitoring. i ran into almost the same thing when i had EchoLink and a remote SDR client both running on the same box — turned out EchoLink was monitoring its own output through the default recording device which happened to be the same virtual cable the SDR client was feeding into

worth checking if VB-Cable or whatever virtual audio you're using has any mix settings that are feeding back on themselves. also if the IRLP node and the RemoteHams client are both set to the same default windows audio device thats almost certainly your problem. try assigning them to completely separate audio devices, even if you have to add a cheap USB audio dongle just to give one of them its own path. 40ms of latency on a link node will do weird things when it loops back through a remote SDR that has its own buffer delay on top

im not super familiar with the RemoteHams SDR side of things but i do run a remote HF station over the internet and the latency stuff you're describing honestly just sounds like the two audio streams getting out of sync and phasing. does the echo happen on both ends or just what you hear locally? because if its only local that narrows it down a lot

also 40 miles on a decent internet connection shouldnt be adding much delay on its own, so if the latency is bad im wondering if the upload on the remote end is getting saturated when both the SDR stream and the IRLP audio are going at the same time. what kind of connection is on that end
