so ive been trying to get Winlink working for a couple weeks now and i think i finally understand the basics but the RMS gateway thing is still confusing me a bit. i set up Winlink Express on my laptop, got it connected to my IC-7300 via the USB audio interface, and i can see the waterfall and everything looks fine. my question is really about the difference between connecting to a public RMS gateway versus setting up your own. like is there any reason a regular person would want to run their own gateway or is that more of an emcomm/club thing?

also when i connected to W4XXX-10 last night i got a session going and downloaded a couple test messages i sent to myself through the web interface. that part worked great. but i tried later and it kept saying no connection and i couldnt figure out if it was the gateway being offline or something i did wrong. is there a way to tell if a specific gateway is actually active before you try to connect?

running vara HF on 40m if that matters, using the propagation map on the winlink website which honestly is pretty useful once you figure out it out

yeah the gateway vs just being a user thing tripped me up too when i first started. running your own RMS is really more of a club or served agency deal, you need a pretty solid setup and someone has to keep it running and updated. for most people just using the public gateways is totally fine. the winlink.org maps show gateway activity and there's also a "channel selection" button in Winlink Express that queries which gateways are actually hearing you based on recent propagation data, that thing is super helpful and way better than just picking one off a list manually.

as for gateways dropping offline mid-session yeah that happens, some of them are running on volunteer hardware and if the op has to QRT or there's a power flicker its just gone. the software should timeout and let you try another one. 40m in the evening can be tricky too depending on where you are and where the gateway is, sometimes you gotta drop to a lower freq or try a closer node on 80m

the propagation map is underrated honestly. i ignored it for months and just kept manually trying gateways and wondering why half my sessions failed. once i actually started using the channel selection feature my connect rate went way up. also make sure your VARA HF is registered if you want the faster speeds, the free version is pretty slow and if the gateway times out before the handshake finishes it'll just drop. might be part of what youre seeing
